<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:26:11
is the Change Proposal itself still accurate / up to date, or would an implementation today be substantially different from what was approved?
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:27:57
Yes, I think this is becoming more relevant. Outside of Fedora, in mkosi, we switched to this model completely and it's working great. So I think the original idea has been proven good. And systemd has made signficicant improvements to allow small installations, so the overhead is smaller and flexibility is better. But I didn't have enough time to work on this for Fedora ;(
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:28:11
The implementation would be pretty much the same.

Latest Info: No response to NEEDINFO sent on 2026-08-31
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:35:25
I don't think we have anyone from CoreOS to answer this today either
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:36:04
@dustymabe:matrix.org you able to address this? or point to someone who can?
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:36:40
(problem starts with me not even knowing where to look to see if this was implemented or not)
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:37:00
I think there were pull requests implementing the change, but I don't remember if they were merged.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:37:13
I can ask in their room...
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:37:32
Scope: Proposal owners: "Remove the overrides from the config"
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:37:32
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:37:32
yeah, *"the"* config, right
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:37:51
worryingly, I think that's probably true
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:38:22
anybody want to wordsmith a proposed !info ?
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:38:25
It's probably this: https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-config
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:38:37
https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-config/blob/testing-devel/overlay.d/05core/usr/lib/systemd/system-preset/40-coreos-systemd.preset still has `disable systemd-oomd.service`
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:38:43
So I think the answer is "no"
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
17:38:53
I could but not sure what we want to do
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
17:39:06
defer? wait a week? reject?
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:39:06
Ah, https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-config/pull/4333 is the PR, open
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:39:08
is CoreOS still lagging behind us or are they tied to the same release schedule as the other Editions now?
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:39:19
they are still not fully tied to us
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:39:25
we asked them to sync to our schedule some time ago
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:39:26
if they are tied to the same schedule then this... is very late
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
17:39:28
although I thought your wordsmithing on the last one was perfect :)
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:39:32

<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>

<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:40:21
does the Change Process make sense for them? but that's probably an open floor question
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:40:26
I think it makes sense to let them decide whether to postpone according to their own schedule.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:40:27
but it's somewhat aligned.

!topic F45 Incomplete Changes Report: Package builds are expected to be reproducible
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:42:37
Not much progress this cycle. Only some minor stuff fixed. Please postpone to next release.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:43:11
this seems reasonable
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
17:43:24
I forget what the target percentage for this was
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:43:29
right, this is more aspirational, so retarteting at f46 should be fine.
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:43:32
Do you know what's the progress on packaging rebuilderd?
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
17:43:33
Can we just lower it so it doesn't need to get postponed each cycle?
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:43:58
well, we don't have the error yet
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:44:03
that's the only actual concrete requirement
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:44:10
we need to modernize the build infra at some point too

<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:44:17
we don't have package builds failing from non-reproducible contents
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:44:30
until that's introduced, you can't meet that goal
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:45:04
I don't know how you'd even do that. build everything twice and only let it through if the output is the same both times? ...
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:45:26
that's how Debian does it, yes
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:45:39
pretty much yes
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:45:43
oh great, we need more hardware from business daddy IBM then
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:45:50
but Debian lets packages flow from unstable->testing so they don't rebuild as many times as us
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>

<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:46:56
there's supposed to be a BRP for nondeterminism checks?
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:47:02
I don't think that ever got activated
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>

<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:47:25

The BRP was fixing known issues. This is active since a few releases.
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
17:48:16
I'm not opposed to retargetting but I don't like perpetually incomplete Changes :)
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:48:57
I've been guilty of owning often-delayed changes, but yeah I think ideally we have a way to stop regressions, and as Neal pointed out without gating we don't
<@salimma:fedora.im>
17:49:17
so ... having that be a different change and just closing this one makes sense too
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:49:22
there needs to be a win condition
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:49:26
this Change doesn't have one
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
17:49:39
is this something you want to discuss during today's meeting or put onto an agenda of a meeting that might be ... shorter?
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:49:42
at least no achievable one
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:49:54
let's put that into a meeting that isn't about incomplete changes
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
17:49:57
please not today
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
17:50:03

The discussion in the blocker meeting was fairly negative. The QA folks were very not entusiastic about landing this so late.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>

<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>

<@supakeen:fedora.im>
18:34:13
Isn't it theoretically mostly confusing to people on systems who might have a mishmash of vendors at the moment?
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:34:26
so Adam complaining about it being late is wrong ;)
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:34:48
yes. I see potential upgrade dependency problems with people having packages from out-of-date Copr installed and them not being able to be updated
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:35:06
it is late because the build containing the change was not pushed to stable before the Beta freeze
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:35:11
if we had already released the beta, I would argue to defer it
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:35:13
but we have not
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:35:15
it wasn't Conan Kudo 😌's fault, but that's what happened
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:35:25
and we are going to have at least one more beta compose because of all the FEs
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:35:42
freeze exceptions alone do not a new RC make
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
18:36:14
(new beta in this case ;))
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:36:18
huh, I'd say... lets defer this and look at it more closely and try and figure out what happened? and also let @adamwill:fedora.im know that it should have landed?
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>

<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:37:01
hrm 🤔
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:37:05
it was built right but not tagged right
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:37:10
that's why it was missing for a month
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:37:19
anybody want to make a proposed !info here?
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:37:38
tagged wrongly how?
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:37:41
that's true... though we could ask for a compose to include it as fesco
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:38:00
because it didn't get branched properly, somehow it missed the split
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:38:02
when it should not have
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
18:38:27
so what happened here, the blocker meeting denied the FE and now the question posed to us is to defer? if we don't does it just go up for FE vote in blockerbugs again?

<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:39:40

<@decathorpe:fedora.im>

<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:39:40
the vendor change landed in rawhide three months ago, f45 was split off a month ago, but the branch doesn't have that commit
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:39:41
yeah, this is taking too much time here... we are almost out
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>

we have two options:
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:39:43
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:39:43
1. we can say we want it in for F45 beta, and allow them to decide
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:39:43
2. we can say we want to treat it as a fesco blocker to land it
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:39:59
honestly it looks like somebody force pushed to f45 with the wrong contents.
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:40:10
yeah, that's what I think happened
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:40:20
there's... no way to force push... there is a hook that denies it.

<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:45:04
yes, this is definitely bad and we should figure it out, but probably not right now in this meeting
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:45:22

<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:53:47
at least sticky vendor has been tested for years :P
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:53:58
I might note that https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2523668 has zero status updates.
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
18:53:59
I tested the open PR and looked at the copr rebuild results (slightly old at this point). This results are mostly OK.
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
18:54:05
Proposal: zbyszek will create a compat package libxml2_2.13 without the python subpackage or the binaries, update the patch to update libxml2 to 2.15, work with the maintainers to merge that and build both and use provenpackager privs to do a mini-mass-rebuild for packages with build fine to use the new version. Packages that are not rebuilt will use the compat package. They might need to be updated to pull in libxml2_2.13-devel to avoid FTBFS.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:54:06
"mostly"?
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:54:13
remember we also need to deal with LLVM 23
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
18:54:20
mostly == 10% packages FTBFS
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:54:29
okay, if we're doing this, then we should absolutely land sticky vendors
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:54:33
I'm still -1 to do this for F45 at this stage
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:54:35
it has less damage and impact
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:54:43
I'm -1 for libxml
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
18:54:49
Basically, I think it's very bad to ship such a fundamental building block of the distro with known vulnerabilities.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:55:05
maybe the failure is letting an uncommunicative change owner sit on it for so long
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
18:55:10
Apart from the stupid soname bump, it's just an update.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:55:10
but I think it's too late now
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:55:15
how bad are the vulnerabilities?
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:55:27
I mean, if we go this far, we should probably do a nonresponsive maintainer check on amigadave
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
18:55:28
Normally, we do something like this at any time.
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:55:38
yeah, probably
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:55:41
because he has been unresponsive the whole cycle
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:55:53
is there precedent for non-responsive to get a change instead of a package reassigned
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:55:56
or both really
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:56:21
they're on Display Systems Group Packager Duty this Sprint so ...
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:56:46
yeah, but that's not good enough
<@supakeen:fedora.im>
18:56:52
@nirik:matrix.scrye.com there are some high severity issues amongst the CVEs
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:56:53
if we are going to do it, I think we have to make this a beta blocker (or do we land this after beta?). if we're going to do that, I'd like to know that the vulns are very critical and practically expolitable
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:56:59
if we are going to do it, I think we have to make this a beta blocker (or do we land this after beta?). if we're going to do that, I'd like to know that the vulns are very critical and practically exploitable
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:57:17
to be clear, the justification is solid to me, but there's been zero work
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:57:32
and the maintainer of libxml2 is basically never around and as the change owner wasn't either
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:57:40
yes, it's not that anyone here thinks it's not important I think, we're skeptical pushing this through in a rush is better
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:57:53
I will fully support someone more responsive taking over the package
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:57:55
and again, this basically would require us to upgrade it to fesco blocker too
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:58:04
I think they're both the same person
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:58:09
yes
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:58:31
(oh I missed a word)
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
18:58:38
ok, does anybody else actually want to vote on zbyszek's proposal? because if not, I'll close the meeting at :00.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:58:40
I'd love to see this landed, but yeah, probibly would mean a delay...
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
18:58:56
Hmm, so I think we could land this after beta.
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:59:05
if zbyszek insists on a vote I would be willing to vote
<@zbyszek:fedora.im>
18:59:18
I don't think it needs be in beta and a "zero day" update is fine.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:59:20
How about doing it now in rawhide and proving everything out and then proposing f45 after it's all more solid?
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:59:29
zbyszekwould you sign up to non-responsive-ing amigadave and taking over both the package and the change ?
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:59:36
if not there is no way I am voting for it
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
18:59:39
+1 to that
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
18:59:49
yeah, basically at this point the maintainer needs to change
<@salimma:fedora.im>
18:59:55
+1 to this provided the package ownership changes
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:00:11
I've already heard from my friends at Solus that the libxml2 upgrade wound up being a major pain for them
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:00:13
this is too big to be done as a provenpackager takeover
<@decathorpe:fedora.im>
19:00:24
+1 to this but I am doubtful
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
19:00:37
There may well be reasons they were not responsive here. I don't think we need to bypass the normal process for that.

<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:01:08
yeah, to be clear I mean do the normal non-responsive process
<@salimma:fedora.im>
19:01:24
which also mean there's no time to get this in to f45
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:01:26
I'm also okay with forcibly adding a comaintainer
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>
19:01:33
we don't really need to vote on doing this alone. the change was already postponed to f46. I would be okay to vote to expediate giving zbyszek ACLs so he can start rawhide builds
<@conan_kudo:matrix.org>
19:01:33
and then doing nonresponsive maintainer
<@gotmax23:fedora.im>

19:01:58
yeah I am ok voting for that if zbyszek agrees to sign up to it
