17:10:31
!topic 2. F45 release testing (rawhide)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:10:40
Tracking issue: https://forge.fedoraproject.org/server/tickets/issues/203
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:10:50
We are lacking behind here.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:10:50
Today, a new test release came out.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:11:02
I created some issues as discussed:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:11:12
https://forge.fedoraproject.org/server/tickets/issues?q=&type=all&sort=relevance&labels=583&state=open&milestone=0&project=0&assignee=0&poster=0
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:11:22
And a project:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:11:38
https://forge.fedoraproject.org/server/tickets/projects/615
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:12:04
I have to add tickets for UEFI.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:12:28
What do you think about it?
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:12:53
That looks really good Peter. Using this, I might actually get involved in testing because it is easier to see what is going on
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:12:55
hopefully we have folks willing to do those tests. ;)
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:13:12
and yeah, could work nicely for rc's and such too...
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:13:36
Yes, it's a lot of manual editing, at the moment.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:14:01
We need to find a way to automate the process of issue generation a bit.
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:14:05
It will definitely make sense to template this all in future... and maybe automate
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:14:54
Yeah, I'd want to set up a little device farm at my house to exercise lol
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:14:55
But I really like this - perhaps because I came from a Jira driven environment where everything was ticketed and tracked in a Kanban board.... this feels familiar to me.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:15:41
Any proposal to improve the ticket contents?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:16:01
Otherwise I would add the missing 4 tickets later today.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:16:11
might link to the test plans on the wiki?
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:16:11
It would be great to get a little mentorship around the expectations for testing etc. If it is just a case of following the document end to end and noting anything that doesn't work... that's all good. If it is a case of identifying changes - we should have a process for spinning off a doc update.
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:16:16
I would only say that I haven't done this testing before and I'm curious to try. I agree with [Ro](https://matrix.to/#/@goroboro:matrix.org) it's quite accessible.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:16:58
Oh yes, on the wiki is better. The problem is to update the links with each new released build.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:18:06
Well, we should add findings to comments, specifically the required update of the docs.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:18:34
And of course, what is wrong. E.G. with the KVM image still has wrong file system tyopes
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:19:17
for the issues might be good to file as bugs in bugzilla... that way they can be nominated as blockers, etc.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:19:45
Yes, indeed, and logged in the ticket not to forget them. :-)
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:21:57
I am keen to help out with some of the testing, but some guidance on what I should be doing might be handy... maybe I just need to ask questions in the [\#server:fedoraproject.org](https://matrix.to/#/#server:fedoraproject.org) channel
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:23:15
Yes, the Server channel is the place to ask. And I will add links to the test descriptions, and probably some more informations.
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:23:29
I definitely need to pick off less critical stuff since it is my first attempt at this
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:23:58
So wrapping up:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:24:24
Proposal: !agreed The WG will start with the F45 test tickets in their current form and to adapt them as necessary during the testing process.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:24:40
Objections?
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:24:53

<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:25:08

<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:25:12

Emmanuel Seyman: Emmanuel Seyman (eseyman) - he / him / his
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:26:10
Hi Emmanuel!#
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
17:26:15
Sorry I'm late, folks
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:26:34
Oh lol is zodbot working again?
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:26:36
!hello
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:26:38
We decided for individual development environments. But didn't had decided about how to do.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:26:38
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:26:53
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:26:53
Who writes a first documentation how to install and configure a dev env ?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:27:05
Or:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:27:13
There was some discussion at
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:27:22
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/create-a-custom-fedora-linux-spin-using-kiwi/194519
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:27:33
Do we have a communication specialist who can try to involve or get some advice from that discussion?
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:29:15
I'd be happy to poke around. I have more experience using debian multistrap and kickstart, but I imagine I can figure it out.
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:29:48
I really want a CI/CD environment for this kind of work though, as it provides the best documentation, but the Forge runners can't support it, so I've been building a ForgeJo runner at my house.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:29:54
you can look at the official kiwi descriptions for inspiration...
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:29:57
https://forge.fedoraproject.org/releng/kiwi-descriptions/
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:31:28
Brett: For the first step we have to use a dev env outside of forge. So, at the moment no CI. That's the second step, when we have something up and running.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:32:27
We need a guide, how to set up our devenv each and how to do the basic configurations.
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:32:39
I'm happy to put a local dev env together for this anyway. I can start on a fresh machine and write up the setup process.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:32:46
I did that for the previous tool (already forgot the name)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:33:11
Brett: that would be great!
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:33:58
braver man than me :D
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:34:12
Is there a project already created? If not, can I get one to make PRs into?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:34:26
proposed. !action Bred will set up a dev environment and document the process so that others can follow suit.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:34:40
I still have to create the repo. Will that later today!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:35:08
proposed. !action Brett will set up a dev environment and document the process so that others can follow suit.
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:35:08
Okay, excellent, I love setting up a project from scratch. 🙂
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:35:21
OK, then:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:35:30
!action Brett will set up a dev environment and document the process so that others can follow suit.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:35:59
I think, that's all about this for today.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:36:11
!topic 4. How to keep track of our styling or phrasing decisions for our documentation?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:36:19
Tracking issue: https://forge.fedoraproject.org/server/tickets/issues/210
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:36:29
Wouldn't is be useful to add an article / Server specific style guide?
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:37:29
Theoretically... we should make sure that the style guide is up to date: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-docs/contributing-docs/style-guide/ -- I mean.... we should all try to adhere to a common style as much as possible
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:38:29
I think that's a good idea where we have deviations or use cases not covered by the main style guide. Even just having a page that says "We follow the main style guide but we also do this, this, this"
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:38:32
That's the general style guide. We have some additions, e.g. the !"editor war" or shat we decided about adochere (I alredy forget it)
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:39:04
A page in the wg docs or something
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:39:41
Ro: You did a lot in this area. Could you write a first version. It will be short at the moment, I think.
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:39:49
In the spirit of "upstream first", we should evaluate whether our style decisions belong in the general style guide
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:39:49
okay... I guess that makes sense...
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:39:51
yeah, a docs page seems reasonable. or... info on server docs repo for people submitting? or both?
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:40:00
(on an ongoing basis)
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:40:22
I could put something together.... maybe just info on the server docs repo?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:40:34
nirik: Yes, we should have a link at the repo description
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:41:26
Ro: Yes, just about the specifics, we add apart from the general docs, or where we make a specific selection.
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:42:02
I will take a look... and see if I can draft up a file... I will do it in my fork and submit a PR and you can tell me to put it somewhere else if that makes sense.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:42:17
OK, then
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:42:21
I am sure I will be missing things... but at least it will be a start.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:42:27
proposed. !action Ro will draw up an initial draft of documentation setting out the server-specific additions to the Docs Style Guide.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:42:39
IS that OK?
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:42:45
+1
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:42:59
+1
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:43:03
!action Ro will draw up an initial draft of documentation setting out the server-specific additions to the Docs Style Guide.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:43:14
OK, next one.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:43:26
!topic 5. Keep our contributor's guide current
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:43:33
No tracking issue yet
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:44:07
All our contribution docs have a note: "outdated". 😒
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:44:54
Maybe we discuss this on our Server room for now?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:45:18
I think everybody of us has already a job to do.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:46:10
which docs are these?
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:46:27
hehehe, whichever you like. There are parts I've encountered that seem out of date. Or indicate that they're out of date when they may not be.
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:46:50
Oh, I'm thinking of server docs though.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:46:53
This docs:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:46:55
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/server-working-group/usr-docs-maintenance/
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:47:38
and the articles beyond that one
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
17:48:10
Oh, I see there's still mention of pagure.io on https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-server we should fix all those. ;(
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:48:10
oh, I'm sensing some style-related PRs in the future 😆
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:48:10
I think the main issue is to fix the pagure links and the pagure way for online editing.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:50:23
OK, I think:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:50:32
!info WG will continue the discussion on how to update the contributor documentation on Matrix and will revisit the matter at the next meeting.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:51:46
Well, let's skip the walk through old issues and use the remaining time for open floor.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:51:55
!topic 7. Open Floor
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:52:28
Some contribution here? The floor is open, for anything
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:53:04
Just a notice that I resolved that dnsmasq PR conflict... so you should be able to merge
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:53:23
I'll do the merge later today.
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:54:06
I will try to add some more on this... but I am now jumping around on quite a few things... so new content is probably a side project
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:54:56
I want to incorporate some of what I've written lately into the server docs. Would everyone be okay if I contribute an article on using mDNS or Ansible with Fedora? Repackaging some of the content from that codeberg site I was working on.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:55:38
Brett: That would be perfect. So we can discuss something real.
<@goroboro:matrix.org>
17:55:55
No objections from me... I think that Ansible is excellent
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:56:22
I think, we should shortly reflect about our projects.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:57:40
The home servcer spin is running, more or less. There is the Ansible project, which is still stepping in place, there is the strenghening updates project, w/0 progress at the moment, streamline backup&restore, and LocalKDC.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:57:51
With the later there is some progress, too.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:58:49
Emmanuel Seyman: Do you have something new?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
17:59:20
No, I'm still working through my packaging issues
<@pboy:fedora.im>
17:59:24
With the Strengthening Server updates project, I had some discussion at flock. But couldn't manage to make some progress here
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
17:59:33
The end is in sight...
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
17:59:59
I feel like Fedora Server has a lot to offer. My favorite thing about it is how current distro-native packages are. It makes it much easier to get started with a reasonable setup. I want to capture that feeling in our documentation.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:00:10
Emmanuel Seyman: Can we put it on the agenda next meeting or in 2 weeks?
<@brettweir:matrix.org>
18:00:26
It's so nice to not be spending all my time wget && curl && bash && install from everywhere and never knowing if it's up-to-date
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:00:56
put what on the agenda?
