<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:05:11
I'm good
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:05:16
OK. let's start.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:05:30
!topic 1. Follow-up actions & announcements
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:05:35
Well, we have:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:05:54
2. AGREED: pboy will write a summary to the list and we should see where the discussion takes us (ongoing)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:05:54
1. Jocelyn will take a look at the current NFS documentation and make a proposal how to proceed.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:06:11
I think, 1. is done with the next topic.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:06:28
Any comment?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:10
No announcement from me. Anyone something to add here?
<@korora:fedora.im>
18:07:15
I brought the NFS file into line with what is expected for a basic NFS server in F43, I still need to learn how to use security features on NFS to flesh out tht part of it.
<@korora:fedora.im>
18:07:29
My changes were pushed to staging with a PR to merge to Main
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:52
OK, lets start with this in the next topic,.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:08:03
I completely forgot to review those changes last weekend
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:08:16
Will comment on the PR next weekend
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:09:20
!topic 2. Server Docs: How to proceed with NFS doc
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:09:33
I just had a connection interruption.
<@korora:fedora.im>
18:09:38
Me too
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:09:46
same
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:10:11
Good to know, i'm not alone :-)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:11:01
I think we have to postpone to next week and take the opportunity to merge to stg. And I think I have to detail the new workflow.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:12:28
Every WG member can commit to main and to stg (or commit PRs). We commit to main for small modifications we think do not need discussion. And comit / merge to stg to discuss things before we merge to main.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:12:53
At least, that's the idea.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:13:31
that sounds sensible
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:13:49
I think I'll do the merging of Jocelyn's modification, at the same time checking if it really works :-)
<@korora:fedora.im>
18:13:58
My brain thinks we should treat main as only modifiable by PR. That way everything is vetted to make sure we are as accurate as we can be.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:15:28
a PR just for a spelling mistake is really heavy-handed
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:15:30
And I'll adjust our git workflow documentation at https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/server-working-group/usr-docs-maintenance/ and on the wiki.
<@korora:fedora.im>
18:16:33
Agreed. That would probably be fine to push to main, but anything major? Should be handled via PR
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:16:59
Somehow I can't find the contribution doku on our wiki. Nevertheless, I'll put everything on the docs pages.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:17:47
!action pboy will update the Server how-to-contribute guide.
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:17:59
I think the proposed workflow is fine for docs, but I think the ansible stuff (due to packaging and versioning) doesn't work well on that workflow. I will attempt to do a rough draft for ansible workflow by the end of November.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:18:17
John Himpel: agrr
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:18:19
ee
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:18:59
John Himpel: agreed!
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:19:45
!hello
<@zodbot:fedora.im>
18:19:46
Steve Daley (mowest)
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:19:55
Hey, Steve!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:20:07
!action jwhimpel will write a workflow proposal for our Ansible development task.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:21:29
Jocelyn (she/her): is typing according to ...bot ??
<@korora:fedora.im>
18:21:43
Nope.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:22:27
OK, but mowest is ?
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:22:29
I haven't checked. Do we have docs explaining how to use Ansible in F43
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:22:54
Or are we depending on upstream
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:23:16
No, we haven't for server, at least. I don't know about anywhere else in Fedora.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:23:39
So I think, we should document our workflow ourself.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:23:51
Agreed
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:24:00
John will write a proposal.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:24:11
OK, next topic.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:24:22
!topic 3. Possible Update issue with PostgeSQL
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:24:29
No tracking issue yet
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:24:46
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:25:31
An Emmanuel Seyman had ab additional discussion i linked earlier in our room.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:25:47
I've the impression, we have a mess here.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:27:57
My question is, do we have to do something or is no need to do anything, because it will workout automatically?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:27:58
Yes, that's the conclusion that I've come to, as well
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:28:33
and I don't see any (easy) way to fix it for F43
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:29:19
TLDR: F42 shipped with Pg16 by default and F43 shipped with Pg18 (the default) and Pg17
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:29:46
but, because Pg16 isn't in F43, the inplace upgrade doesn't work
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:30:14
Is there any feedback from the posrgres maintainer(s)?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:30:25
None that I know of
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:30:28
Is there any feedback from the postgres maintainer(s)?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:31:11
At this point, I should point out that the Change that announced the update to Pg18 contains a number of false statements
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:31:21
something I am not happy about
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:31:33
To my knowledge, pg17 should we able to upgrade version 16, isn't it?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:32:08
But, when I do a system-upgrade, what pg version gets installed?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:32:49
As far as I know a parallel installation of 2 versionis not supported.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:33:19
or no longer, because modularisation is gone.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:33:49
modular packages were not parallel installable either. ;)
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:34:20
but yeah, the postgres thing is a mess. ;( Someone was going to write a quick docs about how to handle the upgrade... I don't know if they have yet
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:35:18
It can but you cannot install postgresql17-upgrade alongside postgresql to do a 16 to 18 upgrade, according to Tom Hughes
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:35:43
you have to install all of postgresql17 and upgrade your 16 databases.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:35:51
Hm, I have a bunch of postgres servers with quite a lot of data .... I'm really happy
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:36:09
then if you want to go to 18, you have to install that, stop everything and enable checksums and then upgrade to 18. ;(
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:36:40
What a mess!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:37:26
Well, what do we do? I think, at least we must amend a waring to the release notes, a warning on out Server Docs and probably an entry in common bugs.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:37:42
And check quickdocs for informaton.
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:38:30
yeah, a quickdoc to point people to for sure... and a common bug (Might be already?)
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:38:59
don't see it off hand
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:39:15
OK, I'll check the information situation and add something if necessary.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:39:52
Emmanuel Seyman: could you support me with the information text if necessary?
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:40:10
there was someone on discussion saying they would write a quick doc, but not sure if they had time yet
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:40:28
My reference bug is https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2411778
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:40:59
Most of the information I have is in the discussion on #devel that you linked to
<@nirik:matrix.scrye.com>
18:41:45
I can add common bugs tag to that one
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:42:04
OK!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:42:27
!action nirik will tag common bugs with the postgres issue.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:42:38
@nirik++
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:43:04
!action pboy will check release notes, server docs and QuickDocs about the postgres issue.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:43:44
Anything else? Otherwise let's go on.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:44:02
Let's move on
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:44:06
!topic 4. Walk through longterm open issues and PRs
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:44:24
Paul Maconi (Aggraxis): are you online and can take over?
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:45:18
I'll be honest I haven't been looking at long term issues for about a month. My work situation is complicated with the current political situation.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:45:33
I spent more time working on F43 testing than issues.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:46:01
OK, so let's simple start with the simplest one :-)
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:46:01
The issues migrated to forge, right?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:46:21
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:46:32
Arrg yes, wait!!
<@korora:fedora.im>
18:47:01
*wonders if the robots are trying to take over*
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:47:11
correct link
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:47:13
https://forge.fedoraproject.org/server/tickets/issues/114
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:47:39
Well, there is a new comment.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:47:40
Yeah I think we need to actually do a change request for this.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:48:21
Although then how do you implement said change? Is this something we have to package up or get included in another package?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:48:58
Hm, good question.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:49:43
From a configuration standpoint it's as easy as the comment makes it sound; create a drop file for the systemd unit and call it a day.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:50:34
Yes, but probably not by default? Maybe it is a post-installation task depending on local requirements?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:51:42
In most cases you will have a dedicated DNS server?
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:51:43
I think that was the earlier discussion. "Fedora should do this by default"
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:52:51
Agreed. This seems as valid a change for Server as for Workstation as for...
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:53:26
Anyway, we can't just close it, I think. And I remember a bit discussion some months ago, but don't remember the details.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:53:37
Anyway, we can't just close it, I think. And I remember a big discussion some months ago, but don't remember the details.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:53:52
What to do?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:54:39
Paul Maconi (Aggraxis): Can you evaluate the topic further and make a proposal? I think there is no hurry
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:54:45
I guess we follow these instructions and construct a change request: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/program_management/changes_guide/
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:54:54
yeah I can dig into it
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:55:07
++1
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:55:56
If this comes down to needing to package something or modify a package, I am not a packager (yet).
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:56:18
!action Aggraxis will dig into the LLMNR (ticket #114) and make a proposal.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
