mostly wanted to poke and ask about the kde wallpaper support stuff

so I have a concept for this based on an analysis of the various desktops and where they are looking for defaults

there are a few ways to go about it, of course

but the one that requires the least amount of changes is for `desktop-backgrounds-compat` to be a virtual provides signifying the presence of `/usr/share/backgrounds/default.png` and `/usr/share/wallpapers/Default/`

would require some minor changes to kde-settings, plasma-desktop, and plasma-workspace

that seems pretty reasonable

that repo has the changes for cinnamon and plasma, and https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/yselkowitz/cosmic-epel/ has a PoC for cosmic

lxde and xfce would need to start using /usr/share/backgrounds/default.SUFFIX instead of /usr/share/backgrounds/images/ but that's just some packaging changes

so far we're sticking with png in ELN

it might be worth getting jxl in place since GNOME by the time for EL11 will use it

but one condition is that all ELs will need to use the same type for the default image

so far that's PNG and I think everyone complies as of 10

for EL11, I expect that to change since there's a significant push toward JXL

last I asked, desktop team still wasn't certain about JXL for 11

as in requiring it, of course it works

fwiw, in f42-backgrounds, we have rich deps in place to handle JXL

yes with the fedora backgrounds branched in EPEL10

PNG support isn't exactly going away

yeah I don't expect issues on that front

it's more that JXL is new and needs packages pulled in for it

which so far we've excluded from ELN based on input from the desktop team

it is certainly possible that will change by 11 and we'll adjust

most of the issues the team had were resolved for GNOME 48, which RHEL 10 didn't ship

I was planning on writing a "spec" document for this, just haven't had a chance to get thoughts on paper
