<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:13
Final draft:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:30
!lionk https://mowest.limesurvey.net/778249?lang=en
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:58
Next activities:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:58
- Transfer final draft to Fedora limesurvey space - still pendig
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:58
- Preparation of the announcement and advertising
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:07:58
mowest is working on a Fedora Mag article. What other advertising campaigns do we want to initiate
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:08:57
I owe the Server WG an apology. And especially mowest. I know I have been a blocker. To make a long story short, I was struggling a lot with burnout. I am recently taking some steps to be less burnt out. I will help pick up on the LimeSurvey work. The key info I need to know is the desired timeline to launch the survey. I can work on importing it and publishing it with support from mowest and you all.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:10:17
JWF (he/him): Justin, no issue and no harm done. I can understand it fully being swamped for some time.
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:11:07
I just pinged mowest in DM about the LimeSurvey. I believe he can send me an exported version of the survey in his personal account.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:11:09
Regarding the timeline: I think, we need 2 weeks to make all the required advertising and announcemants. But then it wuled be fine.
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:11:20
Then, I can upload it into the Fedora LimeSurvey and make some small configuration changes for our site.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:11:36
You should pick your health over Fedora activities any day of the week
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:11:42
OK. I could import it and make it public, and then the Server WG can define the timeline for when to publicly announce it and when to close it.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:12:13
That sounds great!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:12:43
We should decide, what date we intend to start the poll?
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:13:13
On my end, I can commit to the poll being imported to the Fedora LimeSurvey by EOD, Wednesday 4 December
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:13:19
And I will write an `!action` for that one :)
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:13:58
!action @jflory7 due:2024-12-04 Import mowest's LimeSurvey survey into the Fedora LimeSurvey instance and set it to public
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:14:06
from 2024-12-10 to 2025-02-10 ?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:14:32
OK, I think we schould start Dec. 9 at laterst , if we want to start this year.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:14:46
OK, Dec. 10 is OK, too.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:15:14
How long should the poll running? What is a good time frame?
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:15:48
I guess it depends how much time until you want to act on the data somehow? Do you want it in time for the next release cycle?
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:15:49
Sort of depends upon when the Mag article get published
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:16:00
60 days sounds good to me, especially if we have the end of year holidays during that timeframe
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:16:21
Expect that response uptake will be slow in December/early January. We could promote the survey a lot at FOSDEM in early February, since that is a major outreach time for us.
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:16:29
GNOME Asia is 5-6 December…
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:16:38
If it were published in time for GNOME Asia, we could promote it there too
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:16:50
It will be in Bengaluru, India and it is our major APAC outreach for the year
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:16:57
I know that is a little tight
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:17:10
But I would be happy to promote the survey at the event together with the Fedora local team for GNOME Asia
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:17:31
So, maybe close the survey in mid-February?
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:17:35
After FOSDEM
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:18:03
We can publish an article in FedMag on short notice. So, Dec 10 as a start would be OK with that.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:18:25
'GNOME Asia' doesn't screen 'users of Fedora Server' to me, TBH
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:18:25
Also, I could promote the survey if it is public at the event, even if the Magazine article is not done
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:18:40
I can speak to it a bit and provide guidance to the local team for promoting the survey.
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:19:14
Emmanuel Seyman: True, but there are often desktop environment users who use distros for enterprise or server use cases. But still, your point is taken
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:19:19
It might not be a huge miss for feedback.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:19:21
OI suppopse, many Gnome users do use Server, too. And some may administering Servers, I guess.
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:19:27
But definitely, it will be good to promote at FOSDEM.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:19:54
yes, FOSDEM sounds much more like the intended target
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:20:26
I talk about Server poll on Fosdem is out ot it's topoic, I guess??
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:20:47
Last year at GNOME Asia, I was interested to find many people who used Linux for hosting and server use cases more than the desktop. Some attended the event because they were wanting to explore Linux for their personal hardware using GNOME
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:21:14
As a talk for FOSDEM? A talk proposal probably needs to be more than only a survey promotion. But we can work with the Design Team to make a poster to show at the Fedora stand.
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:21:22
And also talk about it in the Distributions DevRoom
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:21:41
I am helping run it with Sumantro, Aoife, Shaun McCance, and folks from openSUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, and AlmaLinux
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:21:51
So, promoting the Fedora Server WG will be possible there
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:21:56
We have time now to plan the promotion :)
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:22:35
This is the right time to talk about these things, actually
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:22:44
FTR, FOSDEM 2025 will be held on 1 & 2 February

18:23:16
!info FOSDEM 2025 will be held on 1 & 2 February
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:23:34
Peter Boy: A topic about Fedora Server could fit the WG, and the survey could be a topic about this. But maybe we discuss this outside of the meeting time :)
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:23:42
We can talk more in #mindshare:fedoraproject.org about it
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:24:06
JWF (he/him): Yes, lit's discuss this outside this meeting!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:24:33
Well, regarding out poll:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:25:14
prpposed !agreed The poll should start Dec. 10 24 and run until Feb 18 25
<@jflory7:fedora.im>

18:28:05
proposed !action mowest and pboy will write in FedMag article in time with that planning.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:29:00
Then we need someone, who starts a thread in discussion in the user area.
<@pboy:fedora.im>

<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:30:36
Someone ready for discussion??
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:30:50
and user mailing list?
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:31:55
I don't have much more capacity, but I am committed to getting the survey imported and published.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:32:21
I can post on the mailing list inviting people to fill out the survey
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:32:34
I am unavailable for most of December. Sorry!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:32:40
JWF (he/him): Yes, that is already a great help for us !!!! The advertising is a talk, our WG has to manage.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:33:19
!action eseyman will post on the mailing list inviting people to fill out the survey
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:33:53
Well, I think we are done with the poll for now, aren't we?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:34:20
Many thanks to JWF (he/him) for the support !!!!!
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:34:59
Sounds good to me 👍️
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:35:26
jwf: Take care of yourself.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:35:33
OK, lets switch to next topic
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:35:54
!topic Ansible assisted installation and configuration of NFS service
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:36:03
Thanks all :-)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:36:03
!link https://pagure.io/fedora-server/issue/138
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:36:22
We have to discuss:
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:36:23
Current Status of Documentation?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:36:23
Current Status of Ansible Code?
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:38:14
Due to illness (pneumonia), I've not made much progress the last two weeks. I have the server side and the client side installing and configuring via ansible. It assume uid & gid are the same on client and host (not too realistic of an assumption). I need to figure out usage of rpcidmap and configure it. Also need to finish documentation.
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:38:51
I hope you make a full recovery soon. 🙏 I am getting over the flu. Being sick bites.
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:39:27
Being sick sure does suck! It sucks more as you age :-)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:40:08
John, get well soon! I was wondering, is the code in ourrepository ready so I can try it oujt?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:40:29
I have started implementing the improvements I suggested a while back.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:40:29
This will take some time
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:40:42
I need to make one more update. I will commit to having that done by EOD on Monday.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:41:49
OK, John & Emmanuel, could you give notice on mailing list, when we can try it ???
<@jwhimpel:fedora.im>
18:42:07
have to step away for a short bit to let a plumber in the house and get him started. Will certainly, send an update to the mailing list.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:42:42
Yes, for sure
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:42:49
OK, so we are done here at the moment and can switch to next topic?

18:45:08
I would like to bring our SBC project to a (temporary) end and start a home server spin-off for SBCs.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:45:52
To create a bootable image is quite easy, according to my experiences with the KVM image.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:47:52
Given we now have Proxmox documentation, I would have thought we would talk about VMs
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:48:53
Yes, VMs is the next hot topic I'm interested in, too.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:49:37
We should select another VM provider. My idea is to check Amazon lightsail.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:49:44
Just popping on here briefly, I have shared the lss file of the survey with JWF (he/him) , and I have some ideas for the Fedora Magizine Article to go with it, I hope to have a draft done on Monday or Tuesday next week. I'm scurrying about at work right now to get a few things done, get packed at home, and leave for a long weekend vacation over our American Thanksgiving weekend. I hope to see you next week.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:50:24
mowest: 👍️
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:50:51
Let''s talk about details next week when you are back.
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:51:49
I have a URL for the survey, once I finish configuring it. This can be used for future communication: https://fedoraproject.limequery.com/fedora-server-f41
<@jflory7:fedora.im>
18:51:58
(It will be public once I finish configuring it, I mean)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:52:39
Great! So we can use that in our articles and other promotion actions.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:54:02
Emmanuel Seyman: I'm wondering wheather we should start with VMs now, or should wait until we have some results from our survey?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:54:37
Good question
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:55:10
Waiting until 25/02 may be cutting it a bit short
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:56:11
Maybe we get some information, wheather there are some preferred or popular root server providers? Specifically affordable (I guess Amazon lifghtsail may not be one of the affordable ones :-) )
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:57:22
cutting short of what?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:59:41
there's a short gap between end of Feb. and the release date for F43 so we would need to work fast
<@pboy:fedora.im>
19:00:25
Yes, indeed!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
19:01:04
I just see, our time is up. So I think, we should continue with this topic next meeting.#
<@pboy:fedora.im>
19:01:23
Or discuss on Matrix or mailing list.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
19:02:03
Ir there is no objection I would close for now.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
19:02:06
See you next week, folks
<@pboy:fedora.im>
19:02:20
OK,. bye bye!
