As fas as I know we are still stuck waiting for Justin. I've jst asked Aoife, if she can help.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:11:34
Anything else here?
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:11:54
I just glanced at the poll for the first time. It looks pretty good?
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:12:22
No that is where things are at. I need to have someone show me the ropes and give me access.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:13:02
it would be nice to be able to move forward on this...
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:13:11
Sorry, this has taken so long, but I think vacations, release of F41, and the release party have been higher priorities.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:13:18
Where are you trying to post the poll?
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:13:36
In the Limesurvey instance that Fedora manages.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:13:49
oh cool :)
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:14:21
Justin has said that he needs to have a 30 minute video chat with me to get me set up as an admin.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:15:36
Yeah, he seems to be really swamped. I hope, someone else might be able to help us out. the delay is hindering our further planning somewhat.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:15:40
Just pinged Justin again, we will see if he has time this Friday to do a screen share with me.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:15:59
That would be great!
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:17:10
mowest: Did you have a chance to do anything about the Fedora Magazine article?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:17:23
mowest: Did you have had a chance to do anything about the Fedora Magazine article?
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:18:13
No, I haven't. What was going to be our topic, again?
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:19:04
I've been fighting to set up a new Fedora Server with LVM spread over two discs, OS on 3rd disk, with the LVM group being my /home, and I can't get the Fedora Installer to do it.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:19:16
We wanted to announce and "advertise" the poll, hoping to motivate many Fedorians to participate.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:19:50
Oh, okay, I can write something like that up.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:20:00
I will write that down this time :-)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:20:11
:-)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:20:36
Thanks. We seem to have some time to do it :-)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:21:06
OK, I think, let's move on and hope for next week.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:21:23

<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:22:04
Our discussion is still a bit sparse.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:22:19
Any ideas?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:23:55
any chance we can get automatic testing on bare metal installations ?
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:24:25
I would appreciate the following: 1. Laying out the manual tests that still need to be done, because they can't be automated. 2. Documentation of a set of procedures to do the manual tests and then publish the results automatically using Adam's tool.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:25:17
Emmanuel Seyman: According to Adam that's a real problem. And anyway, we should perform at least one manual smoke test. That's part of the general Fedora QA strategy
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:25:54
mowest: That's my ideal, too.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:26:03
Adam's tool gives a way to report the manual smoke tests.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:27:14
However, I don't know where the use of his tool is documented. It would be nice if we had all this laid out in our community documentation somewhere, I'm not familiar with the steps or how to use Adam's tool and knowing me I would need to refresh my memory every 6 months when we have to do it again.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:27:54
What kind of tests are we talking about?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:27:56
mowest: agreed. We need a summary and link page.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:27:59
general installing and updating?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:28:32
@PauPaul Maconi (Aggraxis) Yes, basically checking our installation documentation.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:29:20
Does the hardware matter? What I mean is do you need something like a rack mounted server or an old PC or what is the target?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:30:10
The target is any hardware. I use an old server and some older PC's. about 6. generation Intel
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:30:39
Paul Maconi (Aggraxis): Using Adam's tool, I believe it takes that into consideration, the hardware, but it would be good to have the steps outlined reguardless of the hardware.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:30:56
All of my stuff is old too.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:31:17
Mostly desktops that I have turned into servers for the homelab
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:31:42
mowest: I think that's perfectly OK!
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:33:28
My son and I just did an audit of our data, and decided that we only have about 250GB of data that we want to keep and backup. Not a ton of pics, and almost no media for us, so old stuff works well for the homelab and backup servers.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:34:03
I can create a draft of such a list tomorrow or Saturday, which we can then discuss on the mailing list. But I've already written so much that I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:34:07
Ok thanks. Was curious. I have virtual capacity. Was thinking about physical capacity ideas as well. :)
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:34:31
I can create a draft of such a list that mowest mentioned, tomorrow or Saturday, which we can then discuss on the mailing list. But I've already written so much that I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:36:14
OK, proposed !agreed: Pboy writes the draft of a document that describes our test strategy.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:37:21
Or is there someone else out there who would like to do it?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:38:53
I see no objections an no alternative idea.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:39:05
Therefore
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:39:13
!agreed: Pboy writes the draft of a document that describes our test strategy.

<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:40:06
Hm, zodbot doesn't like me
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:40:14
Yeah, indeed.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:40:32
Well, let's proceed anyway.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:40:42
!topic 4. Ansible assisted installation and configuration of NFS service
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:41:02
I finally have time to come back to this
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:41:35
What's the goal with this topic? To show people the kinds of things you can do with Ansible and Fedora Server?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:41:45
Good! Unfortunately, I didn't manage to test it.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:42:30
The goal is to ship an Ansible role that people can use to configure NFS shares without having to know the ins and outs of NFS
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:43:25
Yes, we have a set of specifically supported services we want to make easy to use. That's part of our technical specification.

<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:45:02

<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:45:29
Yes, you can
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:45:44
I've already added a task in Planify
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:45:59
OK.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:46:21
So, I think we should move on?
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:46:31
I think we can
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:46:43
!topic 5. Open Floor
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:47:16
It's a long time we had so much time left for this topic :-)
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:47:21
Mentioned above...
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:47:25
3 hdd's: sda = 500GB; sdb = 120GB; sdc = 1TB. I would like to install Fedora Server on sdb = /boot/efi, 600mb; /boot, 1024mb; /, 117GB. sda and sdc, I would like to join together with LVM for a total of 1.5TB and use as /home. The Fedora installer doesn't seem to let me create the LVM group to join the two drives, am I missing something?
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:48:39
mowest: I think you are. I'll search in my docs and let's discuss it. You have to use the advanced custom option during install.
<@eseyman:fedora.im>
18:49:10
I would be very surprised that this isn't possible
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:49:17
Yes, I even tried following the docs but it doesn't seem to allow me to both create the LVM and designate it as /home.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:50:27
Hmm... I know with the RHEL installer I can do it, and it'd be trivial with a kickstart.cfg as well. I might set up this scenario at home sometime and try it out. I haven't tried it from a fedora server installer.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:50:44
I'm not sure if the installer is seeing the previous install on sdb of Fedora Server and that is messing it up when I'm trying to do the custom install or if it is because I have ext4 partitions (1 partition on each of the sda and sdc) that is messing it up.
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:50:59
Probably not tonight, though.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:52:11
mowest: As part of the installation you have to delete existing partitions. it is the "-" sign at the bottom in the default installer.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:52:22
I've run through the install twice, the first time it didn't create any LVM volumes at all but designated the correct partitions and install on sdb, and sda was /home, but without LVM.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:53:03
Peter Boy: I was wondering if I would have to delete all the existing in the custom install to make it show me all of the options, I don't think I did that on round #2.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:54:02
I tried reusing the partitions that were already on sdb which it did work, it reinstalled onto sdb, but /home is now just inside of / on sdb instead of on sda and sdc.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:54:55
I will try a third time deleting all existing partitions, and start from scratch. I would still select all 3 drives before going into custom correct?
<@aggraxis:fedora.im>
18:55:06
It would want to create LVM partitions, so I would think you would need to clear the existing partitions
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:55:42
Paul Maconi (Aggraxis): Okay, you and Peter Boy are pointing me in the same direction there.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:55:55
mowest: Yes, select all 3 partitions and then either custom or better advanced custom
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:56:43
mowest: Yes, select all 3 disks and then either custom or better advanced custom
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:56:56
Peter Boy: Does Advanced Custom allow you to set up LVM partitions and volumns though? I did that on round 1
<@mowest:fedora.im>
18:57:22
I didn't see any LVM options in the Advanced, but lots of partitioning options.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:58:15
@mowest: You would add the mount point /home and then reconfigure the default selection to create new pv's and vg's.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
18:59:37
mowest: I'll send you a description on the weekend, and then we can turn it into a short documentation about LVM administration :-)
<@mowest:fedora.im>
19:01:14
Yes, I would like to see some more LVM documentation without RAID, because that will be this system. I'm going to just have ext4 formatted partitions instead of btrfs just because I don't have the same size disks in this data backup server.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
19:01:38
Sounds good, you all have given me something new to try on round 3 thank you.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
19:01:57
I will probably make my 3rd attempt on Friday or Saturday.
<@pboy:fedora.im>
19:02:06
OK, our time is up.
<@mowest:fedora.im>
19:02:26
