I've been fighting to set up a new Fedora Server with LVM spread over two discs, OS on 3rd disk, with the LVM group being my /home, and I can't get the Fedora Installer to do it.

We wanted to announce and "advertise" the poll, hoping to motivate many Fedorians to participate.

I would appreciate the following: 1. Laying out the manual tests that still need to be done, because they can't be automated. 2. Documentation of a set of procedures to do the manual tests and then publish the results automatically using Adam's tool.

Emmanuel Seyman: According to Adam that's a real problem. And anyway, we should perform at least one manual smoke test. That's part of the general Fedora QA strategy

Adam's tool gives a way to report the manual smoke tests.

However, I don't know where the use of his tool is documented. It would be nice if we had all this laid out in our community documentation somewhere, I'm not familiar with the steps or how to use Adam's tool and knowing me I would need to refresh my memory every 6 months when we have to do it again.

The target is any hardware. I use an old server and some older PC's. about 6. generation Intel

Paul Maconi (Aggraxis): Using Adam's tool, I believe it takes that into consideration, the hardware, but it would be good to have the steps outlined reguardless of the hardware.

My son and I just did an audit of our data, and decided that we only have about 250GB of data that we want to keep and backup. Not a ton of pics, and almost no media for us, so old stuff works well for the homelab and backup servers.

I can create a draft of such a list tomorrow or Saturday, which we can then discuss on the mailing list. But I've already written so much that I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

3 hdd's: sda = 500GB; sdb = 120GB; sdc = 1TB. I would like to install Fedora Server on sdb = /boot/efi, 600mb; /boot, 1024mb; /, 117GB. sda and sdc, I would like to join together with LVM for a total of 1.5TB and use as /home. The Fedora installer doesn't seem to let me create the LVM group to join the two drives, am I missing something?

mowest: I think you are. I'll search in my docs and let's discuss it. You have to use the advanced custom option during install.

Yes, I even tried following the docs but it doesn't seem to allow me to both create the LVM and designate it as /home.

Hmm... I know with the RHEL installer I can do it, and it'd be trivial with a kickstart.cfg as well. I might set up this scenario at home sometime and try it out. I haven't tried it from a fedora server installer.

I'm not sure if the installer is seeing the previous install on sdb of Fedora Server and that is messing it up when I'm trying to do the custom install or if it is because I have ext4 partitions (1 partition on each of the sda and sdc) that is messing it up.

Probably not tonight, though.

mowest: As part of the installation you have to delete existing partitions. it is the "-" sign at the bottom in the default installer.

I've run through the install twice, the first time it didn't create any LVM volumes at all but designated the correct partitions and install on sdb, and sda was /home, but without LVM.

Peter Boy: I was wondering if I would have to delete all the existing in the custom install to make it show me all of the options, I don't think I did that on round #2.

I tried reusing the partitions that were already on sdb which it did work, it reinstalled onto sdb, but /home is now just inside of / on sdb instead of on sda and sdc.

I will try a third time deleting all existing partitions, and start from scratch. I would still select all 3 drives before going into custom correct?

It would want to create LVM partitions, so I would think you would need to clear the existing partitions

I didn't see any LVM options in the Advanced, but lots of partitioning options.

@mowest: You would add the mount point /home and then reconfigure the default selection to create new pv's and vg's.

Yes, I would like to see some more LVM documentation without RAID, because that will be this system. I'm going to just have ext4 formatted partitions instead of btrfs just because I don't have the same size disks in this data backup server.
