Regarding actions we have the same situation as last meeting. We have a few outstanding action but are mostly up to date.

Regarding announcement:

"Fedora Server on rented root Server Hardware - the example of Hetzner"

"Fedora Server as a modern, fully featured mail server" which maybe 4-5 articles

In the back of my head I'm planning a small series articles "Fedora Server Edition Use Cases" for publication in Fedora Magazin of may be somewhere else, too.

Regarding the article publication: We are quite behind schedule with the “One story for every release” project (although we are not the only ones). I would like to compensate a little with such a series of articles.

I love the idea of writing an article for Fedora Magazine. I would need to think of a topic. Although I have joined this group, I would have to say that my son is more the admin for our homelab, just because he has had the time the last few years.

@mowest: Please think about it. And your son could be an author (or atleast so-author) as well.

He has used our Fedora Server homelab as a playground to learn Rust Web Development, and has his own site running on it.

I think, the current version of the draft poll is already fine.

Regarding question 2, the shorter version is far better.

Great we can go with that. If we can shorten or condense the wording of any of the questions that would be great. I'm also wondering about overall length. We don't want a survey that is so short that it doesn't give us good actionable data, but we also don't want a survey that is so long it discourages participation.

Yes, we have to balance length and amount of information. Do you think, if we take generally the shorter version, it might be too long?

Please, explain, because I lack experience in this. What is the purpose of Question 3 that focuses on where they run a VM of Fedora Server? If it is important to know the "where" do we have enough options listed?

I like the idea, to combine the first part of "old" 3 with question 1 and to focus a "new" 3 on VM. That's a great progress in my view.

I think, we should specifically try to get information about the VM side. I thing, VM is the new "standard" installation.

Also for question #4, one of our purposes is to learn better the current use cases for Fedora Server, I wonder if we have that one fleshed out with enough options as well.

I guess, question 4 captures most the various usages.

I'm all for getting information about VM installs, especially if that is a popular way to run Fedora Server, I just want to make sure that we are getting all the information that would help us answer development questions in the future.

If there is other information that you think would be helpful to make decisions about the VM installs I would love to develop those questions too if we are not currently getting enough information about VM installs.

VM is a world that I don't play in because of cost, and my hardware in my homelab is too limited to run VM's on top of a metal install.

So I appreciate the views of those in our WG that do play in the VM world.

We are (still) very focused on hardware. That was certainly OK 10 years ago. But now the power of hardware is so high that it can hardly be utilized without VMs alone.

I think in future development we should more take VMs into account.

I definitely agree with that Peter Boy especially when you look at the popularity of Proxmox even in the homelab, and much of the Proxmox use is to run VM's even though they have done much to add container support too.

@mowest: Regarding home lab: what hardware are you running it on?

10-14 year old desktops that others were going to throw out. Max memory is 8GB, and my hard drive arrays are never more than 2TB or in RAID only 1TB, but that has been enough for our files. My son is mostly into programming, and neither of us have gotten into file serving lots of media files like movies and music.

OK, until recently I used a Zotac mini PC i3 5. Gen and 16 gb RAM and 2x 1TB SD It had cost me about 60 Euros and works fine with 2 vms.

I think my CPU's are i3 first or second gen.

I'm sure I could run a VM or two, but I would limit the CPU and memory pretty quickly. But with the machines that I have we can run a file backup server, and our main home server with containers that serve our web apps that we use on our home Intranet.

We also use Syncthing as our file syncing to the main server and to all of our desktops.

Yeah, a VM is probably in most cases an overkill in a home lab.

Oh, syncing. I see, we shold put our homelab experience together and write an Fedora Mag article.

Back to the questions, are there any other questions Emmanuel Seyman that you would like to see, that gather information that you would find helpful.

Not really. My main takeaway is that we stand to lose user participation if we go longer than what it already is
