15:11:39
There was a discussion about folding this meeting into the FCOS one. I assume that hasn't already happened?
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:12:20
I don't think so, but that's a good topic :-)
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:12:22
Ok, I'm going to move the agenda along, but if you join late, you can still register as present :)
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:12:41
Ah, hm. I haven't seen that (I've been offline :sheepish: )
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:12:48
let's talk about that first
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:12:58
!topic bootc meeting and FCOS meeting
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:13:50
So on this topic, the last I heard was the Fedora bootc initiative was going to get re-upped for another year as the general image mode idea was going to continue
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:13:56
outside of CoreOS
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:14:17
but I've been offline due to travel and things the past two weeks
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:14:23
I may be behind the times
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:15:03
Personally I am in favor of having an Image Mode meeting and have FCOS topics be a section on the agenda of that meeting
<@snthrailkill:matrix.org>
15:15:08
Yeah in the chat we discussed that if we did combine meetings then it would be rebranded to something like "image mode" meetings as to include both topics.
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:15:55
oh, before I forget... !link https://matrix.to/#/!qFKhufhrzYxhwZuHRY:fedoraproject.org/$iwTcgzavgOjiNur1P1yLVkQdzT_NvesPc7xfB1q1Ifs?via=fedoraproject.org&via=matrix.org&via=fedora.im
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:16:07
(dear meetbot, please work like that.... bugger)
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:16:11
!link https://matrix.to/#/!qFKhufhrzYxhwZuHRY:fedoraproject.org/$iwTcgzavgOjiNur1P1yLVkQdzT_NvesPc7xfB1q1Ifs?via=fedoraproject.org&via=matrix.org&via=fedora.im
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:16:55
anyway, wouldn't FCOS be a general wider topic, though? Image mode for FCOS seems a bit of a small slice of the work for FCOS
<@snthrailkill:matrix.org>
15:18:48
That is a concern. I personally haven't wanted to get started with CoreOS and just use bootc fedora images. So image mode in my mind is completely divorced from FCOS. Not sure how others feel about the overlap there
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:19:31
Ideally more and more of the FCOS work inherits from fedora-bootc, as of Fedora 43, CoreOS getting close to fedora-bootc
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:20:11
Ideally more and more of the FCOS work inherits from fedora-bootc, as of Fedora 43, CoreOS is getting close to fedora-bootc
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:20:55
Could this be something we experiment with? for like 2-3months and see how it goes?
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:22:55
Let me check in with Jef later today as I think I'm supposed to start reporting up what we've done as the initiative overall in the project. See if that makes the most sense for the governance structure we're currently working in 🤔
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:23:22
!action Laura to check in with Jef about whether we should experiment with merging meetings to make one larger image mode meeting
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:23:33
meanwhile, let's go talk about the forge topic
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:23:40
!topic Forgejo move
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:23:48
!link https://gitlab.com/fedora/bootc/tracker/-/issues/75
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:23:58
Clément Verna: want to kick this one off?
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:25:02
Sure, so Fedora has a new forge (self-hosted) based on the Forgejo project. The idea is to migrate from the existing pagure.io to that new instance
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:25:36
I am not sure what will happen about the Fedora org on gitlab but I was wondering if we want to move to forgejo
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:26:29
One benefit for moving, is that IIUC the forge will have fedora hosted workers to run things like GitHub actions etc ...
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:26:36
which is appealing for fedora-bootc
<@rsturla:fedora.im>
15:31:09
<@rsturla:fedora.im>
15:31:09
I think it would be good to find out the long-term plan for the GitLab instance. It would be very nice if the Forgejo instance becomes the single place for all Fedora projects to centralise on.
<@rsturla:fedora.im>
15:31:09
Is there a migration strategy/tooling available to aid with moving issues and repos over?
<@hricky:fedora.im>
15:33:00
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/fedora-forge-update/164338
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:33:02
nimbinatus: maybe something to check with Jef too, about the plans for the GitLab org? I suspect it will stay there
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:33:20
I can ask, for sure
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:33:37
!action Laura to check with Jef regarding GitLab org and Forgejo
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:33:44
!link https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/fedora-forge-update/164338
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:34:21
I don't know if there is tooling for migrating issues, that's a good question
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:34:42
Atomic Desktops have an org on forgejo https://forge.fedoraproject.org/atomic
<@rsturla:fedora.im>
15:34:57
I guess a first step would be to reserve the namespace either way. Even if it's simply to add a README directing people over to the GitLab
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:35:25
fun decision time: which namespace should we reserve :p
<@rsturla:fedora.im>
15:36:10
Do we have the relevant stakeholders here to make these decisions? Not quite sure how things work.
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:36:23
I have a secret plan/conspiracy to push for image mode vs package mode in Fedora, so I would vote for image mode
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:36:26
That's a great question. We have some, but not all
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:37:00
Maybe we can add proposals in the ticket and have folks weigh in there
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:37:08
I think that's the best approach
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:37:26
!action All to add proposals for namespaces for Forgejo to the ticket
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:38:08
I'm guessing we're catching people offline for various travel/holidays/catching up after kids going back to school, to be honest
<@rsturla:fedora.im>
15:41:07
Is Fedora also going for the "image mode" branding? So far I've only seen that in the context of RHEL
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:41:35
I can answer on that. Technically bootc is a CNCF trademark now, so it gets wonky trying to work that in.
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:42:22
image mode can be general/generic (package mode/image mode), so I think that was the general thought process
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:43:21
Yes, I think it helps also making the separation between bootc the application/binary and the idea/workflow behind image mode
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:43:35
ie using OCI containers to build and release the OS
<@snthrailkill:matrix.org>
15:45:51
That makes sense to me. I can get behind that
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:47:00
All right, are there more topics folks want to chat about? I could kick up the CoreOS convergence topic, but I'm not seeing the CoreOS folks usually chatting about that online here.
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:47:30
I can give a quick update
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:47:42
Or Hristo Marinov too :)
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:47:59
then let's do it :)
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:48:05
!topic coreos convergence
<@cverna_:matrix.org>
15:48:58
The big news is that the FCOS next stream is officially switched over to F43, which includes now being built via podman build (using fedora-bootc), and leveraging signature verification on container pulls.

15:51:24
I think that's all, Hristo Marinov do you think about something else?
<@snthrailkill:matrix.org>
15:54:06
Exciting news! A big step closer! Thanks for the update
<@nimbinatus:matrix.org>
15:54:51
