15:03:14 <zodbot> Meeting started Wed May 24 15:03:14 2017 UTC. The chair is kshlm. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot.
15:03:14 <zodbot> Useful Commands: #action #agreed #halp #info #idea #link #topic.
15:03:14 <zodbot> The meeting name has been set to 'gluster_community_meeting_2017-05-24'
15:03:36 <kshlm> I'll wait for 3 more minutes for people to roll in.
15:06:45 <JoeJulian> Good $greeting_time
15:07:24 <kshlm> Hey JoeJulian!
15:07:43 <kshlm> Just the 2 of us here right now.
15:07:58 <ndevos> oh, no, you're not alone!
15:08:09 <ndevos> I'm just waiting for the roll call topic to start :)
15:08:19 <kshlm> #topic Roll Call
15:08:29 <ndevos> YES! I'm here
15:08:29 <kshlm> ndevos, here you go
15:08:32 * JoeJulian is here.
15:08:40 <kshlm> And I'm here
15:09:39 <ndevos> so, its really only the three of us? thats very sad
15:10:06 <kshlm> ndevos, Looks like it.
15:10:41 <JoeJulian> Where are the rest of my friends in Bangalore? I miss them.
15:10:58 <ndevos> I didnt see any maintainers mentioning they wont join, but only very few of them send those anyway :-/
15:12:25 <kshlm> I have no idea where everyone is either.
15:12:46 <kshlm> So, should we continue with just the 3 of us?
15:13:26 <kshlm> Also, no new topics or updates AFAICT. Just the couple of topics carried over from last time.
15:13:53 <JoeJulian> I only have one solid community concern, not sure if there's anyone here that can provide an update anyway.
15:14:00 <JoeJulian> (openstack)
15:14:00 <ndevos> I didnt bring any topics, but am happy to give my opinion/answer if you like
15:15:00 <ndevos> I guess OpenStack falls into the "integration" bucket... which may end up somewhere near me
15:16:50 <kshlm> ndevos, Was that you answer?
15:17:05 * ndevos isnt sure what the question is?
15:17:19 <kshlm> From the last meeting
15:17:28 <kshlm> Openstack Cinder glusterfs support has been removed
15:17:35 <kshlm> #topic Openstack Cinder glusterfs support has been removed
15:17:42 <kshlm> GlusterFS support was removed from Openstack Ocata
15:17:48 <kshlm> How can we get it back in?
15:18:19 <kshlm> I have nothing to add to this. I'm not really familiar with the Openstack world.
15:18:28 <ndevos> I dont know why it was removed, if it was broken, someone should have reported it and we could have had a chance on fixing it
15:19:23 <kshlm> That's where we are then. I don't think anyone present has a clear picture about this.
15:19:23 <ndevos> I thought there were quite a lot of OpenStack users with Gluster as storage, so removing it seems like an awful thing to do IMHO
15:20:16 <ndevos> do we have any more details about the removal? maybe a launchpad bug or commit message somewhere?
15:21:25 <JoeJulian> Red Hat removed it because they're trying to push Ceph for openstack storage instead of gluster.
15:22:23 <JoeJulian> Eric Harney of Red Hat removed it without any discussion.
15:22:26 <ndevos> I dont think that makes much sense, OpenStack, Ceph and Gluster are all community projects, Red Hat should not pressure one solution over an other in communities
15:22:28 <JoeJulian> His rational:
15:22:34 <JoeJulian> "Keeping a driver in the Cinder tree requires running a CI platform to
15:22:34 <JoeJulian> test that driver and report results against all patchsets submitted to
15:22:34 <JoeJulian> Cinder. This is a fairly large burden, which we could not meet once the
15:22:34 <JoeJulian> Gluster Cinder driver was no longer an active development target at Red Hat.
15:22:35 <JoeJulian> "
15:23:07 <JoeJulian> "If someone from the Gluster world is interested in bringing this driver
15:23:08 <JoeJulian> back, I can help coordinate there. But it will require someone stepping
15:23:08 <JoeJulian> in in a big way to maintain it.
15:23:08 <JoeJulian> "
15:23:23 <JoeJulian> Eric Harney <eharney@redhat.com>
15:23:46 <ndevos> hmpf, not sure how much effort that is... but we can use the CentOS CI for those kind of tests
15:24:11 <JoeJulian> ndevos: I agree that Red Hat should not. Unfortunately, that doesn't always mesh with reality.
15:25:14 <JoeJulian> I also suspect if there was more community involvement by the developer team, there would be less political friction within the corporation.
15:25:18 <ndevos> JoeJulian: well, it is true that Red Hat does not have any Gluster developers working on Cinder, but that does not mean nobody has an interest
15:26:17 <ndevos> indeed, we as a Gluster community can pickup the Cinder+Gluster integration, we just need volunteers to do so
15:26:25 <JoeJulian> Don't I know it! I was quite angry when I discovered the deprecatoin without any community interaction.
15:27:30 <ndevos> I dont know who did the work for Cinder+Gluster, but it would have been nice if that developer got in touch with the Gluster community
15:28:02 <JoeJulian> Yeah, not sure on that. Harney did the removal.
15:28:40 <ndevos> never heard of him, he might be the Cinder maintainer?
15:30:33 <ndevos> Anyway, for getting support back in Cinder, we need at the very least someone to do some CI work
15:30:46 <JoeJulian> https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/ThirdPartySystems/RedHat_GlusterFS_CI shows BharatK and deepakcs
15:31:32 <ndevos> I dont know Bharat, Deepak left Red Hat a long time ago
15:32:02 <kshlm> Bharat left as well.
15:32:07 <JoeJulian> yeah
15:32:48 <ndevos> hmm, I guess their manager failed to re-assign their responsibilities
15:33:58 <ndevos> I can get in touch with Eric Harney, and check what his estimates are on getting Cinder+Gluster CI to run
15:34:17 <JoeJulian> ndevos++

15:34:18 <ndevos> we then 'only' need a volunteer to actually do the work
15:34:43 <JoeJulian> Having the scope will help with that.
15:34:53 <ndevos> yes, that is what I am thinking too
15:35:10 <ndevos> do you have a link to that message you posted?
15:35:57 <JoeJulian> I have tweets, but the greatest content is an email. I'll forward it to you and the lists.
15:36:22 <ndevos> ok, that'll help
15:36:45 <JoeJulian> email was the only place I was tactful. ;)
15:37:04 <kshlm> Cool! We actually have an AI on a topic.
15:37:09 <ndevos> I'll see if I can find the Cinder source repo and if there is anything removed or just disabled
15:37:10 <JoeJulian> lol
15:37:29 <kshlm> ndevos, I've been checking the cinder repo.
15:37:34 <kshlm> It's gone completely.
15:37:49 <ndevos> kshlm: oh, ok :-/
15:38:13 <ndevos> well, it should be easy to get back, it might only be a revert away
15:38:27 <kshlm> Though should be a simple revert once we have someone to maintain. It was just one file mainly,
15:38:52 <kshlm> https://github.com/openstack/cinder/commit/16e93ccd4f3a6d62ed9d277f03b64bccc63ae060
15:38:58 <kshlm> The commit which removed it.
15:39:11 <kshlm> ndevos, So shall I add an AI on you?
15:39:32 <ndevos> kshlm: sure, go for it
15:39:49 <kshlm> #action ndevos will check with Eric Harney about the Openstack Gluster efforts
15:39:54 <ndevos> kshlm: and on JoeJulian to share his conversation
15:40:24 <kshlm> #action JoeJulian will share his conversations with Eric Harney
15:40:32 <kshlm> Done.
15:41:02 <kshlm> Awesome. I guess we're done for today.
15:41:28 <JoeJulian> I guess so. Thanks, kshlm, for leading this again.
15:41:38 <kshlm> JoeJulian, ndevos, Do you have anything else to discuss?
15:41:48 <ndevos> nope, still nothing from me
15:41:49 <kshlm> If not, I'll end this meeting.
15:42:05 <kshlm> JoeJulian, ndevos, Thanks for attending today's meeting.
