15:10:56 <heidi> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/IRC_Meeting_3
15:11:09 <heidi> Any problems/questions on stage 1?
15:11:56 <elinwaring> I have to apologize for not updating the spreadsheet even though i’ve been updating my wiki page.
15:12:07 <heidi> Ah, OK.
15:12:17 <cmerlo> Not yet. I'm a little behind still, but now that the holidays are over and everyone's back at school, I will have the time to catch up
15:12:24 <heidi> Updating the spreadsheet is helpful for us to keep track of where everyone is.
15:12:30 <heidi> cmerlo, Yup, I get that!
15:12:46 <heidi> So please so update the spreadsheet with your progress.
15:12:46 <cmerlo> It was so nice putting my son on the bus today. :)
15:13:10 <heidi> Oh! I get that too!
15:13:17 <Susan> I have a two day car ride back to NY so I plan to finish then. Of course when my husbanc drives!!!
15:13:27 <heidi> And then they go off for good and it feels less good.
15:13:47 <heidi> Susan, I've done something similar. Where are you driving from?
15:13:48 <Susan> And then they come back home to live....
15:13:55 <cmerlo> Oh, I have some time still before that
15:14:05 <heidi> Oh! That too! My grocery bill triples when my son returns home.
15:15:01 <heidi> As this is our last IRC meeting before we meet next week, if you have any questions about the stage 1 activities, feel free to use the google list.
15:15:12 <heidi> To ask questions that is.
15:15:41 <Susan> Driving from Florida. 80 + degrees here today
15:15:52 <Zhanyang> Ok, I still stage 1c activity 2 and 3 to complete. I am in California visiting my daughter.
15:15:53 <heidi> So jealous!
15:16:02 <heidi> Zhanyang, fun!
15:16:24 <heidi> As you complete activities, please pay special attention to activities B.4 and C.3.
15:16:55 <heidi> These activities revolve around planning for including HFOSS in courses.
15:17:35 <heidi> We will use the results of these activities in the face-to-face meeting next week so it is important that you've thought a bit about courses.
15:17:36 <Zhanyang> I did B.4 but not yet C.3
15:17:41 <cmerlo> When we're done, can you post the URL of where the log of this chat will be, so that I can find what you just said again?
15:17:41 <lorip> hi sarahzeli - can you do a quick intro?
15:17:45 <heidi> Great!
15:18:10 <sarahzeli> #info this is Sarah Zelikovitz from CSI
15:18:21 <heidi> welcome sarahzeli
15:18:32 <lorip> heidi - where will the chat log be posted?
15:18:46 * heidi checks...
15:19:23 <kussmaul> https://meetbot-raw.fedoraproject.org/foss2serve/2019-01-02/
15:19:29 <heidi> The logs for all meetings are posted:
15:19:32 <heidi> #link https://meetbot-raw.fedoraproject.org/foss2serve/
15:19:40 <cmerlo> Thanks! (And thanks @lorip)
15:19:40 <heidi> Yup, kussmaul beat me to it. :-)
15:19:45 <sarahzeli> I spent some time looking at B.4 and C.3. My concern is in how much background knowledge students will need to get up to speed with a FOSS project
15:20:05 <heidi> sarahzeli, good question!
15:20:21 <heidi> That is one of the questions we'll talk about in our meeting next week.
15:20:22 <lorip> sarahzeli - what class do you hope to incorporate HFOSS into?
15:20:43 <sarahzeli> especially since I am thinking of beginner courses -- students know only one language and one or two interfaces
15:20:51 <kussmaul> there are many ways to participate in and contribute to HFOSS projects without coding - this is a common misperception.
15:21:27 <elinwaring> Documentation, bug fixing, creating tutorials etc
15:21:27 <heidi> HFOSS projects are overjoyed when students do things like fix typos in documentation.
15:21:39 <elinwaring> +! know that from personal experience
15:21:52 <heidi> elinwaring, what project have you worked with?
15:22:31 <elinwaring> I was a long time contributor and maintainer for Joomla and also have been a contributor to CiviCRM … plus I have some R packages
15:22:46 <heidi> One very helpful contribution is to have students test the download and install instructions for the development environment and contribute any necessary changes back.
15:23:09 <heidi> Wonderful! The voice of experience speaks!
15:23:29 <heidi> What is CiviCRM?
15:23:49 * heidi quickly googles
15:23:55 <lorip> #link https://civicrm.org/
15:23:56 <elinwaring> That’s actually mentioned in the wiki … it’s a constitutent relationship management system for non profiets
15:24:15 <heidi> elinwaring, so you're familiar with the community?
15:24:17 <elinwaring> it’s a php application that integrates with most of the major CMSes
15:24:19 <elinwaring> yes
15:24:52 <elinwaring> it’s been a while since i contributed to it but I know them, it’s not that big
15:24:52 * heidi thinks out loud about using Civicrm as one of the projects during the meeting next week...
15:25:01 <sarahzeli> OK, so if I am covering PHP in an intro class, students can add examples, or check documentation etc. It is a natural fit
15:25:03 <lorip> sarahzeli - it will really depend upon your goals how you will be able to incorporate HFOSS into a beginner course
15:25:22 <elinwaring> yes, actuallly if you would like me to talk to them let me know
15:25:47 <lorip> yes, and you can also look at code examples - you can have them trace code, understand the importance of good documentation, etc.
15:26:18 <heidi> elinwaring, are you willing to share your experiences next week?
15:26:30 <elinwaring> sure
15:26:38 <heidi> elinwaring, it could be that there are others who would be interested in joining you on that project.
15:26:43 <heidi> wonderful!
15:27:08 <Zhanyang> I am think to introduce version control and bug tracking in my SE class for writing software specification and software testing.
15:27:20 <heidi> Zhanyang, Cool!
15:28:07 <lorip> zhanyang - version control will the be topic of several sessions next week
15:28:10 <heidi> So the next topic is signing up for groups.
15:28:21 <heidi> #topic Stage 2 Group Sign-up
15:28:29 <heidi> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups to sign up
15:28:36 <Zhanyang> I have some experience using GitHub in my research project team and like to use it in my class as well.
15:29:12 <heidi> Don't worry too much about signing up for a specific project.
15:29:19 <lorip> as a side note to everyone, please make sure you have git installed on your laptop for next week and bring your github log in info...
15:29:34 <heidi> Please DO sign up for one or more courses which you would like to incorporate HFOSS.
15:30:13 <cmerlo> @lorip Command line Git? Or something else?
15:30:30 <heidi> And some of you have already signed up for courses. Great!
15:30:42 <lorip> cmerlo - yes command line
15:30:48 <cmerlo> ok
15:31:11 <heidi> Are there questions about signing up for groups?
15:31:19 <Zhanyang> Right now, I see only myself signed up for Software Engineering course. Are there others who may interested in?
15:31:21 <lorip> #link https://git-scm.com/
15:31:42 <cmerlo> @heidi I have one
15:31:50 <heidi> Zhanyang, only a few folks have signed up for groups.
15:31:57 <heidi> go for it cmerlo.
15:32:05 <cmerlo> On that page, there are courses and projects. Should we pick one of each, or just one of the things, or what?
15:32:36 <heidi> cmerlo, Pick at least one course and possibly two. Don't worry about the projects.
15:32:42 <cmerlo> OK thanks
15:32:56 <heidi> We have found that different POSSE audiences tend to self-organize around either projects or courses.
15:32:58 <cmerlo> And so just edit the wiki page when we choose?
15:33:09 <miraa> I just signed up for SE, but I don't really teach that. I teach a senior project course where students do group projects
15:33:13 <heidi> This particular group seems to be more interested in specific courses so sign up for those.
15:33:19 <heidi> miraa, Sure, that's fine.
15:33:25 <heidi> cmerlo, yes, just edit the wiki page.
15:34:05 <cmerlo> OK thanks
15:34:18 <heidi> miraa, It sounds like your course is in the "capstone" are.
15:34:32 <miraa> yes, it's a capstone
15:34:45 <heidi> Yup, you're in the right group.
15:35:25 <heidi> Other questions about groups?
15:36:06 <Zhanyang> Mirra: we have many common interests in manage team work and communication in SE class and a capstone project.
15:36:10 <heidi> OK, next topic:
15:36:19 <heidi> #topic Good of the Order - Logistics
15:36:35 <heidi> The schedule for our meeting next week is here:
15:36:37 <heidi> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_2_Activities
15:37:07 * heidi thinks that we had best add the location of the meeting to the Stage 2 page.
15:37:17 * lorip just thinking the same thing!
15:37:56 * lorip a map of the location probably would be helpful also...
15:38:31 <heidi> We are meeting in the John Jay college of Criminal Justice.
15:38:44 <cmerlo> @lorip What time do you think you and Darci will be getting to Penn Station? I see a train that can get me there at 8:00, and another at 8:13
15:38:48 <heidi> Room 6.67
15:38:52 <sarahzeli> Laptop with git installed...anything else that we need to bring? (besides all the username and passwords that are getting too many for me to remember!)
15:39:01 <heidi> sarahzeli, :-)
15:39:17 <heidi> Good question. Please bring a laptop if you have one.
15:39:18 <lorip> cmerlo - not sure, I need to look at schedules...
15:39:23 <cmerlo> ok
15:39:30 <Zhanyang> Is on campus parking possible?
15:39:31 <heidi> Tablets typically don't have sufficient power to handle things like the git activity.
15:39:40 <heidi> Zhanyang, Good question! I'll ask.
15:39:46 <lorip> heidi - is there an address?
15:40:01 * heidi checks...
15:40:27 <elinwaring> John Jay parting … hard but not impossible, either at the hospital to the east or one of the big public lots to the west
15:40:29 <heidi> 524 West 59th. StreetnNew York, NY, 10019
15:40:44 <heidi> Ah, thank you elinwaring. I'm not familiar with the area.
15:41:03 <elinwaring> Or across the street (59th) under the apartment building
15:41:23 <lorip> #link https://newserver.jjay.cuny.edu/directions-0
15:41:43 <Susan> Public transportation is easy. Any train that goes to Columbus circle works
15:41:45 <heidi> We will have a continental breakfast of pastries, muffins, etc.
15:41:53 <lorip> elinwaring - do you know which building?
15:42:39 <elinwaring> no, I just know it’s on the right if you turn left around the northern corner of the JJ building.
15:42:48 <Zhanyang> we may need to contact the college public safety office to let them know the events, if someone checks us at the entrance.
15:43:07 <heidi> Zhanyang, Yes, we are providing John Jay with a list of names.
15:43:25 <Zhanyang> Great, thanks.
15:43:27 <elinwaring> Bring ID
15:43:30 <heidi> I'm not sure exactly how the entrance works, but security will have your names and should know that you are arriving for a workshop.
15:43:38 <heidi> elinwaring, Ah, good advice
15:44:12 <lorip> based upon the address sounds like we are in the new building
15:44:43 <heidi> lorip, I didn't realize that John Jay had two buildings?
15:44:59 <Susan> Actually three but two are connected
15:45:02 <elinwaring> more than 2
15:45:20 <lorip> heidi - I didn't either until I went to their website and looked at the directions...
15:45:46 * lorip definitely need info on the schedule page as to where people should go, etc...
15:46:11 <heidi> lorip, Got that.
15:46:33 <heidi> It looked to me on the map like there was only one so good catch.
15:46:40 <miraa> yes, and maybe send out an email, too.
15:46:45 <elinwaring> There’s a certain amount of you can’t get there from here
15:47:00 <heidi> #info We will research the details of location and check-in and post via email and on the Stage 2 activities page.
15:47:14 <sarahzeli> thanks
15:47:27 <heidi> Breakfast will be pastries and muffins with coffee and tea.
15:47:42 <heidi> Lunch is sandwiches and we have included options for vegans and gluten free folks.
15:47:51 <heidi> Dinner will be at the Greek Kitchen.
15:48:05 <heidi> What other questions are there?
15:48:30 <cmerlo> Oh, yeah, when do you need to know if we can make it to dinner?
15:49:16 <heidi> Umm, two weeks ago? ;-)
15:49:22 <cmerlo> lol sorry :)
15:49:39 <heidi> The sooner the better. I'm calling the restaurant tomorrow so if I could know by COB today that would be helpful.
15:49:43 <cmerlo> We had to get past Christmas before we could start planning stuff for January
15:49:59 <cmerlo> I just have to make sure my wife can get my son picked up in time.
15:49:59 <heidi> Oh, I get that. :-)
15:50:08 <heidi> Yup, I get that too@
15:50:29 <cmerlo> The place is near the school I assume?
15:50:47 <heidi> cmerlo, Yes, it is within a block.
15:50:50 <heidi> Walkable.
15:51:06 <heidi> We should also mention that only a subset of the team will be at the meeting next week.
15:52:13 <sarahzeli> OK, looking forward to meeting you and learning much more about this
15:52:16 <heidi> Greg (hislopg), myself, Lori (lorip), will be there. Darci may also join us.
15:52:34 <elinwaring> Looking forward to it!
15:52:37 <heidi> Yes! Me too!
15:52:54 <ying> I will be join you, Heidi.
15:53:07 <heidi> Wonderful!
15:53:12 <heidi> Are there any last questions?
15:53:13 <lorip> and we have a few POSSE alum joining us too!
15:53:34 <heidi> Oh, right!
15:56:14 <lorip> any other questions?
15:56:39 <cmerlo> Not from me
15:56:41 <sarahzeli> I'm sure I will have some in person next week...but not now
15:56:44 <heidi> OK, if questions arise, feel free to ask one of us or the list.
15:56:49 <Zhanyang> no question form me.
15:56:55 <heidi> Happy New Year!
15:57:01 <heidi> #endmeeting
