16:36:08 <becka> Good morning all
16:36:17 <glikins[m]> sorry -- hadn't been clear in my original post -- wasn't sure reason for wanting notnh-stop but if it's "like the longer flight for cross country" than a little hop might make it worth it
16:36:18 <MarcoGerosa> Hi, good morning
16:36:45 * glikins[m] will be in and out per norm
16:36:46 <heidiellis> Let's start with the roll call

16:41:31 <heidiellis> Glad that you could join us!
16:41:37 <heidiellis> Now on to our next topic.
16:41:39 <heidiellis> #topic Updates and Questions on POSSE stage 1 activities
16:42:26 <heidiellis> What questions do folks have on the stage 1 activities?
16:43:11 <farhan> I finished Stage 1 Part A and just started working on Part B
16:43:47 <heidiellis> Super!
16:44:12 <Ahernandez> I'm still working on Part A.
16:44:15 <heidiellis> #info Please remember to log your progress in the spreadsheet:
16:44:18 <MarcoGerosa> I am almost finishing stage 1. Sorry, I got a little behind.
16:44:18 <becka> farhan did you find it easy to track your progress
16:44:23 <heidiellis> #link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hG45B8aK4A7JaSDx4PE3UvXQNMw6Ph-iE53YqvMOrWQ/edit#gid=0
16:44:33 <MarcoGerosa> I've read all the material so far
16:44:34 <heidiellis> MarcoGerosa,
16:44:43 <becka> Ahernandez awesome, is it going well?
16:45:14 <heidiellis> MarcoGerosa, Please make sure to log your (brief) observations in the spreadsheet so that we know how you're coming along.
16:45:29 <MarcoGerosa> Sure. I'll work on that.
16:45:31 <farhan> Yes becka, I think logging progress was fairly straightforward.
16:45:54 <becka> farhan great!
16:46:35 <heidiellis> Anyone having any difficulties?
16:46:49 <heidiellis> Other than getting caught up that is. This has been a busy term!
16:47:46 <heidiellis> I should also mention that if you dive in depth into some of the activities, they could take hours.
16:48:02 <heidiellis> Please note that we aren't expecting you to spend hours.
16:48:08 <heidiellis> Welcome ajan
16:48:19 <heidiellis> ajan, are you here for the POSSE meeting?
16:48:25 <heidiellis> If so, would you introduce yourself?
16:49:17 <heidiellis> The project evaluation activity can take a lot of time so feel free to timebox that.
16:49:38 <Bo> heidiellis, thanks for the warning. I finished part A, but still feel somewhat lost.
16:49:39 <ajan> hi heidiellis, no I am a POSSE alumni - my name is Vangel Ajanovski, i was last year in Bologna, and I am joining the channel occasionally
16:50:09 <heidiellis> Welcome ajan !
16:50:27 <heidiellis> Feel free to weigh in with opinions as an alum.
16:50:56 <heidiellis> Bo, We don't expect you to be an expert by the end of stage 1. Just to get your feet wet.
16:51:11 <heidiellis> Bo, and if you have any specific questions, now would be a good time to ask.
16:52:06 <becka> IMHO, This is really about learning and having fun :) We just want you to have the foundation so tht stage two is a positive experience
16:52:32 <heidiellis> Absolutely!
16:52:36 <heidiellis> OK, so next topic:
16:52:38 <heidiellis> #topic Courses in which you plan to use HFOSS
16:52:48 <heidiellis> What courses are folks planning on using HFOSS in?
16:53:01 <MarcoGerosa> Software Engineering
16:53:20 <farhan> Intro to Computer Science
16:53:20 <heidiellis> If you use the #info, this will make it easier to generate readable notes ;-)
16:53:31 <MarcoGerosa> #info Software Engineering
16:53:31 <heidiellis> farhan, Cool!
16:53:39 <farhan> #info Intro to Computer Science
16:53:41 <heidiellis> MarcoGerosa, Super!
16:53:50 <becka> MarcoGerosa do you plan to construct an entire course around HFOSS, or sections of a class?
16:53:51 <Bo> software engineering course at various levels
16:53:54 <heidiellis> farhan, Any idea what you might do in your class?
16:54:41 <becka> Bo serval classes with different assignments?
16:54:48 <MarcoGerosa> I plan to use in specific sections, to begin with. More specifically, I want to conceive gradual assignments that will help to learn the diverse software engineering topics
16:55:02 <heidiellis> For those of you doing a software engineering course, here is a link to a syllabus where I used HFOSS in an SE course:
16:55:05 <heidiellis> #link http://mars.wne.edu/~hellis/CS490/syllabus%20fa14.html
16:55:18 <becka> MarcoGerosa that sounds great
16:55:19 <Bo> for example, sophomore sw engineering, junior sw engineering, and senior level
16:55:19 <heidiellis> becka, Do you have a link to your course?
16:55:20 <MarcoGerosa> Great! Tks heidiellis
16:55:24 <Ahernandez> #info Programming I
16:55:38 <farhan> heidiellis we are actually planning to integrate HFOSS across the CS curriculum, so the Intro to Computer Science course will probably include topics that provide a basic understanding of HFOSS to students, the activities are yet to be designed.
16:55:41 <heidiellis> Bo, Ah, so you could use a range of assignments.
16:55:48 <Bo> yes
16:56:02 <becka> heidiellis I do, but I am hoping to post it at the end of this term as I adjust it :)
16:56:20 <heidiellis> farhan, Right! Dickenson already has incorporated HFOSS into your year-long capstone.
16:56:24 <heidiellis> Very cool!
16:56:56 <heidiellis> Note that there are examples of several courses on the foss2serve site.
16:57:13 <heidiellis> Along the left margin. Also on the TeachingOpenSource.org site which has a better search feature.
16:57:22 <heidiellis> Activities are located on both sites as well.
16:57:34 <farhan> heidiellis yes that is correct, we have it in our senior seminar I and II already, but we are hoping to start off with HFOSS concepts early in the CS program and have students do some HFOSS work in almost every course!
16:57:35 <Bo> for us, the students work on some small assignments, then a year-long group project
16:57:35 <heidiellis> And if you develop materials, please contribute back! ;-)
16:57:53 <Bo> thanks- that sounds helpful
16:58:03 <heidiellis> Bo, so you'd likely be interested in the Capstone at Dickinson
16:58:26 <Bo> yes- I'll check it out if available
16:58:32 <heidiellis> There are links to two capstones on foss2serve.
16:58:35 <heidiellis> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Capstone,_Dickinson,_Braught
16:58:59 <heidiellis> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Capstone,_WNE,_Jackson
16:59:06 <becka> I must say good bye. I am standing in front of a class of students staring at me :0
16:59:14 <heidiellis> Does anyone have any questions about courses?
16:59:57 <heidiellis> OK, lets' get to the fun stuff.
16:59:58 <heidiellis> #topic Questions about POSSE Stage 2 Activities
17:00:09 <heidiellis> There is a rough draft of the stage 2 activities here;
17:00:21 <heidiellis> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_2_Activities for the Stage 2 DRAFT agenda
17:00:37 <heidiellis> Anyone have any questions about this?
17:01:31 <heidiellis> Dress is casual.
17:01:56 <heidiellis> And we'll have dinner in the first evening and have dinner out at an Italian restaurant the second night.
17:02:41 <Ahernandez> Yes. I will review the example of foss2serve page, but I'd appreciate your feedback about the difference of using a HFOSS instead FOSS project in a course, which characteristics the project should have.
17:03:20 <heidiellis> Ah, we define the "h" in HFOSS fairly broadly.
17:03:29 <heidiellis> Any project that somehow benefits the human condition.
17:03:35 <heidiellis> So that includes things like education software.
17:03:48 <heidiellis> We have also had good luck working on accessibility aspects of existing projects.
17:04:04 <heidiellis> For instance, last fall I had students working on accessibility aspects of the Mozilla debugger.
17:04:18 <lorip> ahernandez, are you asking what the difference is from the student perspective? as in why choose an HFOSS project as opposed to a FOSS project?
17:04:40 * heidiellis thinks that lorip is Lori Postner from Nassau Community College, a foss2serve team member.
17:05:11 <lorip> yes, I thought I'd jump on since I knew Becka had to leave early for class :)
17:05:28 <heidiellis> Thank you!
17:05:29 <Ahernandez> @lorip yeah, the difference from the student perspective.
17:05:48 <heidiellis> Ahernandez, We have some evidence that HFOSS projects are more attractive to women students.
17:06:08 <heidiellis> And we also find that the HFOSS communities are generally more welcoming due to the altruistic nature of the project.
17:06:15 <heidiellis> They tend to be very welcoming of students.
17:06:29 <lorip> a couple of things - first HFOSS communities typically have a code of conduct
17:07:01 <lorip> that means that there are expectations about how people interact - some FOSS projects are not very polite :)
17:07:33 <lorip> also, because they are humanitarian, the atmosphere is welcoming as heidiellis mentioned
17:07:46 <heidiellis> Any other questions about stage 2?
17:07:59 <heidiellis> Moving right along....
17:08:01 <heidiellis> #topic Signing up for Stage 2 project and course groups
17:08:01 <lorip> many schools now incorporate service learning and HFOSS fits nicely there as well...
17:08:54 <heidiellis> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups is the page to indicate your course and project interest
17:09:02 <heidiellis> Some of you have already signed up. Good!
17:09:23 <heidiellis> The page is organized with projects on the top and courses on the bottom.
17:09:28 <heidiellis> Please sign up for at least one of each.
17:09:28 <Ahernandez> Than you. Based on that, I identify: a) altruistic, b) code of conduct, c) humanitarian. Also, I'll look at the examples of the foss2serve site.
17:10:39 <lorip> ahernandez - nice summary!
17:10:40 <Bo> heidiellis, will do
17:10:40 <heidiellis> When signing up for a project, you may change your mind.
17:11:02 <heidiellis> We're just trying to get an idea of what people are thinking. We expect that at least some of you may change as you learn more.
17:12:25 <farhan> Just want to clarify: we are expected to sign up for at least one project and one course?
17:13:01 <heidiellis> farhan, Yes, one of each.
17:13:07 <heidiellis> And we understand that you may change.
17:13:30 <heidiellis> There is a fair bit of group work time on Wednesday and this gives us an idea of how to structure that.
17:13:40 <farhan> heidiellis okay thanks for clarifying
17:14:14 <heidiellis> Hello markhall
17:14:17 <heidiellis> Welcome!
17:14:39 <markhall> Hi.
17:14:50 <markhall> I thought that this did not start until 12:30 CST
17:14:59 <heidiellis> markhall, We were just discussing that everyone should sign up for one project and one course on this page: http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups
17:15:27 <lorip> markhall, sorry it was 12:30 EST
17:15:30 <heidiellis> markhall, no need to do that now, but please do in the next week or so.
17:15:42 <markhall> Is this what we will work on when we arrive?
17:15:44 <heidiellis> markhall, all times are Eastern as is noted in the email.
17:16:07 <heidiellis> markhall, IRC is a common form of communication in HFOSS communities.
17:16:29 <lorip> markhall, I'm not sure I understand your question - can you clarify?
17:16:29 <heidiellis> We use it for online meetings to let folks get to know one another and to get everyone familiar with how IRC works.
17:16:30 <markhall> Yes, I understand.
17:16:40 <markhall> What are the groups for?
17:17:07 <lorip> the groups are primarily for our sessions on Wed 6/20
17:17:14 <markhall> Ah, ok
17:17:25 <lorip> signing up for one project and one course helps us plan Wed's activities
17:18:05 <heidiellis> markhall, Do you have any questions about any of the Stage 1 activities?
17:18:24 <markhall> Just having trouble how to get started.
17:18:36 <markhall> I see the spreadsheet comments and where did they get this info?
17:18:46 <lorip> markhall, is a specific exercise giving you trouble?
17:18:55 <markhall> Learned about the differences and similarities between Free and Open.
17:19:08 <lorip> markhall, what info?
17:19:09 <markhall> That is a comment in the spreadsheet. How did they get this info?
17:19:20 <markhall> I feel like I am missing a step in the middle..
17:19:39 <heidiellis> The list of activities to complete are here:
17:19:41 <heidiellis> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_1_Activities
17:19:59 <lorip> that is each person's comment on the activity they completed
17:20:07 <heidiellis> At the top of that page is a link to the spreadsheet. The idea is to complete the activity and then provide a brief observation in the spreadsheet.
17:20:10 <markhall> That helps...missed that page
17:20:24 <lorip> quick question - has everyone joined the google group?
17:20:37 <Bo> i did
17:20:41 <markhall> I will get caught up over the weekend. Final grades due Fri 4:30 pm
17:20:47 <markhall> I joined
17:20:49 <Ahernandez> I haven't.
17:21:06 <farhan> I've joined
17:21:20 <lorip> we seem to have had some emails getting put into people's spam folders so we are going to send all emails through that - if you haven't gotten an invite, please let us know
17:21:33 <heidiellis> markhall, Have you joined the google group?
17:21:39 <markhall> Yes I did
17:21:46 <heidiellis> Super!
17:21:58 <heidiellis> OK, are there any remaining questions?
17:22:02 <markhall> Joined right after receiving the email.
17:22:13 <heidiellis> Anything related to Stage 1, online activities, travel or Stage 2?
17:22:15 <markhall> Has any emails been sent to that google group yet?
17:22:20 <Ahernandez> It says the invitation expired. Is it possible to get another invitation?
17:22:34 <lorip> ahernandez, did you get the email invite? it should have been sent last Tuesday 5/15
17:22:47 <lorip> oops, didn't read your email before I hit enter
17:22:50 <heidiellis> :-)
17:23:08 <lorip> yes, stoney jackson set it up, I'll send him an email now and ask him to re-invite you
17:23:58 <heidiellis> Any other questions?
17:24:03 <MarcoGerosa> Kind of a stupid question, we need to fly to PHL, right?
17:24:18 <heidiellis> Well, I'm taking the train from Hartford.
17:24:21 <Ahernandez> Thank you.
17:24:23 <heidiellis> MarcoGerosa, Where are you located?
17:24:28 <MarcoGerosa> Arizona
17:24:49 <heidiellis> Yup, you'll need to fly.
17:25:08 <heidiellis> Although my daughter took Amtrak across the country and said that it was lovely. :-)
17:25:10 <MarcoGerosa> Ok, I was just making sure the airport was right :)
17:25:15 <heidiellis> Yup, PHL.
17:25:43 <MarcoGerosa> Tks
17:26:05 <heidiellis> Any other questions?
17:26:48 <lorip> if you aren't sure if you are on the google group you should have gotten an email from greg on Monday regarding travel info
17:26:58 <heidiellis> OK, I think we're done here.
17:27:45 <heidiellis> travel: We are just over a month from our stage 2 workshop at Drexel. If you haven’t already make your travel plans, you should do so now to ensure that you get a good fare. Please note that travel must be on a US Flagged carrier if you are being reimbursed by the HFOSS team. You must also travel coach and we ask that you do what you can to get a good fare.
17:27:45 <heidiellis>
17:27:55 <farhan> Thanks for the informative session!
17:28:13 <markhall> Yes, I did get the google group message.
17:28:20 <heidiellis> You're welcome! We're looking forward to meeting everyone in Phila! Should be a great time!
17:28:28 <heidiellis> markhall, Super!
17:28:45 <heidiellis> OK, i'm going to end the meeting. I usually hang out in this channel so if you have questions, ping me.
17:28:52 <lorip> we will have 1 more IRC before we meet at Drexel...
17:28:55 <heidiellis> If you use my name, my IRC client will flash.
17:29:15 <heidiellis> #endmeetin
17:29:16 <markhall> By 1 more, that does not include meeting tomorrow
17:29:21 <heidiellis> Helps if you type it correctly...
17:29:23 <heidiellis> #endmeeting
