20:04:24 <stoney> we got everyone?
20:04:44 <stoney> OK... off we go
20:04:46 <stoney> #topic Updates and Questions on POSSE stage 1 activities
20:04:53 <hislopg> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/IRC_Meeting_2 contains the agenda for this meeting
20:05:09 <Scovil> Randy Scovil, Cuesta College/Cal Poly
20:05:37 <stoney> Ah thanks Scovil ... I moved on too fast
20:05:55 <stoney> How are you all doing on the stage 1 activities? What questions do you have?
20:05:55 <Scovil> all good
20:06:25 <rhoyle> I was planning on starting the next chunk this weekend. No real questions from the first chunk.
20:06:45 <TheBaxter> May we add content pages to the foss2serve site outside of our user page?
20:06:53 <imad_antonios> Same here. I have stalled a little since our first meeting.
20:07:42 <hislopg> TheBaxter: for the stage one activities, we'd like to keep all the material on you User page... do you have something else in mind?
20:09:10 <ykk> hislopg TheBaxter for example, I spotted a few typos/errors that I was itching to fix but was unsure if we should touch other pages
20:09:26 <ykk> :-)
20:09:37 <TheBaxter> I would love someone to fix mine if there are any.
20:10:39 <ykk> TheBaxter: haven't looked at yours :-)
20:11:14 <stoney> Fixing typos are welcome I thinkg
20:11:16 * ykk wonders if IRC is being slow or if the meeting is rather quiet
20:11:21 <hislopg> ykk: typos are fair game!
20:11:26 <stoney> Right :)
20:11:49 <terry`> The agenda has a link to irchelp.org tutorial which is broken, and if you go to the site home, there are lots of broken links. I am not having trouble with instructions, but just noting this.
20:12:24 * stoney looking
20:12:29 <hislopg> Any other questions or comments about the Stage 1 activities thus far?
20:12:52 <hislopg> terry: thanks - we'll fix that.
20:13:51 <ykk> I'm curious if people already selected a FOSS project for their future course
20:14:24 <rhoyle> I have not.
20:14:53 <hislopg> #topic Courses in which you plan to use HFOSS
20:15:06 <ykk> Also, I believe we will select one for the purposes of working on the Stage 2 activities. Will we need to stick with it beyond that workshop?
20:15:21 <ykk> ^ one = a FOSS project
20:15:29 <hislopg> ykk: good question. mostly people haven't gotten that far at this point in POSSE - but please share any thoughts you might have
20:15:44 <stoney> terry` I made a note of the problem on the discussion page for the dead link... Thanks!
20:16:03 <hislopg> ykk: we focus on projects for stage 2, but people do decide to switch after that sometimes
20:16:58 <hislopg> OK... has anyone thought about a course where you might try to introduce HFOSS?
20:17:35 <ykk> Yes, I am going to include it in my Software Engineering course for Junior students.
20:17:37 <terry`> I'm planning to have a FOSS (I hope an HFOSS) component to my Intro Software Engineereing course this Fall. Two class sections, 40 students each, eight teams of five in each class.
20:18:00 <imad_antonios> I am hoping to introduce HFOSS in my senior capstone course, which I teach regularly. Enrollment about 15.
20:18:05 <hislopg> So two for software engineering - that's a common choice and a good one.
20:18:17 <rhoyle> I would do it in our CS3 equivalent, which is focused on C programming right now. I want to do more software engineering in it.
20:18:29 <hislopg> capstone is another good one...
20:18:56 <hislopg> In each of these examples we can point people to other faculty who have tried something similar!
20:18:58 <stoney> rhoyle that's interesting... so CS3 is after datastructures?
20:19:05 <rhoyle> Yeah.
20:19:12 <Scovil> data structures and possibly mobile if there a desire for an app client
20:19:26 <rhoyle> It’s C and Unix, but I want to have a bit more software engineering in it so that they understand programming tools better.
20:20:17 <hislopg> rhoyle: Open source is quite appropriate for that since so many of the tools and techniques are coming out of open source
20:20:31 <stoney> rhoyle sounds like a good idea... I'm teaching a "software development" course right now, which is probably in that CS3 slot
20:21:02 <stoney> rhoyle what hislopg said :)
20:21:07 <rhoyle> Exactly. I want them to understand what gcc and gdb actually are. :-)
20:21:56 <carlosmalt> Sorry about joining late.
20:22:14 <hislopg> Scovil: we have one faculty member using open source in data structures classes by using code examples of various data structures that she finds in HFOSS projects...
20:22:20 <ykk> carlosmalt: welcome!
20:22:31 <stoney> hi carlosmalt !
20:22:46 <Scovil> interesting
20:22:46 <carlosmalt> Hi everyone!
20:22:57 <hislopg> Any other thoughts on courses for HFOSS?
20:23:12 <hislopg> carlosmalt: hi! Welcome!
20:24:40 <hislopg> #topic Questions about POSSE Stage 2 Activities
20:25:05 <stoney> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage_2_Activities
20:25:24 <hislopg> Not sure if you've started to look ahead yet, but are there any questions about Stage 2? That's the face to face part next month...
20:25:37 <carlosmalt> I’ve been looking at the open-source software initiatives at ARRL (arrl.org), the national association for amatuer radio.
20:26:10 <ykk> from this page #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups it looks like we have a choice of 3 projects. How familiar do we need to be with each before we get to SFO?
20:26:25 <carlosmalt> The connection to HFOSS is that ARRL’s mission is to provide emergency services.
20:26:54 <stoney> ykk there will be an activity in part C (I think) that will have you explore one of these projects
20:26:57 <hislopg> ykk: We don't expect that you'll have time to become very familiar, but anything you can do to get some idea about the projects will be a help
20:27:42 <stoney> carlosmalt cool... I haven't seen that before
20:27:57 <carlosmalt> I’ve been thinking of putting together a special topics class on software-defined radios which combines computer networking, communication technologies, and emergency infrastructures, all in the context of software-defined radio open-source software and hardware.
20:28:09 <hislopg> We are also open to people focusing on other projects as you move forward, although we like people to focus on the same ones for some of the shared activities
20:28:52 <hislopg> Carlos' interest in software defined radio is a good example of this :-)
20:29:19 <terry`> I was interested in Sahana because Python, but 1) I don't want to be the only one choosing a project, I'd like to have company in SFO, and 2) were there some doubts about activity on this project?
20:29:50 <hislopg> For the short term we want some focus on particular projects because then we can do things as a group during POSSE... for the long term, we want people to explore what makes sense in their environment
20:30:09 <stoney> terry` to answer 1, that's why we ask folks to sign up so that we can get a sense for interest
20:30:14 <ykk> terry`: your #2 comment was also my concern
20:31:06 <hislopg> We know some people with connections to Sahana, so perhaps we can get a better reading on the project status before stage 2...
20:31:57 <hislopg> We've had students contribute to Sahana in the past, but not currently
20:33:04 <hislopg> Any other questions about stage 2?
20:33:45 <stoney> I'm a little out of touch with the "Sahana situation" ... what's giving folks the impression that they are not active? (just curious... I really don't know)
20:34:33 <stoney> hislopg if this is off topic, let me know :)
20:35:51 <hislopg> There was a recent post on a Sahana forum that indicated that they really weren't looking for outside contributors at the moment
20:36:05 <stoney> ah, OK... missed that
20:37:00 <terry`> There is a Sahana blog entry about a pictograph field study in March 2017, results yet to be analyzed, so something is happening on the ground, at least.
20:37:14 <ykk> stoney: my impression was also based on the activity we did in http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Intro_to_FOSS_Project_Anatomy_(Activity) The date of their last commit was too far back
20:37:55 <stoney> terry` so folks are using it
20:38:53 <hislopg> #topic Signing up for stage 2 groups
20:38:54 <stoney> ykk is this the repository you were looking at? https://github.com/sahana/eden
20:39:37 <hislopg> ykk there are multiple repositories connected with Sahana
20:39:56 <stoney> right and some are old
20:40:09 <stoney> happens to a lot of FOSS projects which can make things confusing
20:40:23 <hislopg> This is often a confusing issue when first approaching a project - that you have to find the right repository!
20:40:53 <ykk> stoney: actually, looking back at my notes, it looks like at the time the latest commit was in March 2017, but the milestones were behind. hislopg you are right, and that was one of my concerns for selecting the project to give to students -- if it is too confusing to navigate, maybe I should get them started with something more straightforward.
20:41:01 <stoney> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/Stage2_Groups
20:41:53 <stoney> ykk got it :)
20:42:17 <stoney> the link I just posted is where we'd like folks to sign up for groups before stage 2
20:42:38 <hislopg> our last topic is really just a reminder. We ask that everyone follow the link Stoney just posted and pick a project and course of interest...
20:42:41 <stoney> There are two groupings.... by project... and by courses
20:42:46 <hislopg> :-)
20:42:51 <ykk> stoney: do we sign up for the project _and_ the course?
20:42:54 <stoney> please sign up for at least one under each
20:43:06 <hislopg> ykk: yes, one of each
20:43:06 <stoney> ykk you got it
20:43:17 <ykk> stoney: can we sign up for both? :-)
20:43:38 <stoney> ykk now I'm confused :)
20:43:52 <stoney> one project AND one course please
20:44:15 <hislopg> I'd suggest picking just one project and one course... you can sign up for more than one, but when it comes time to do things in small groups in stage 2, you can only be in one place at a time...
20:44:45 <ykk> hislopg: stoney: Thank you for clarification!
20:44:52 <stoney> awesome :)
20:44:53 <hislopg> OK... any other questions or comments?
20:44:55 <terry`> So choose from those three projects only for stage 2?
20:45:06 <hislopg> terry: yes please
20:45:46 <hislopg> Note that we're not trying to tie people to projects - we just need something in common to work on during the workshop
20:46:04 <terry`> right
20:46:16 <ykk> if we would like to select a different (H)FOSS project, when would we be able to see if we can have others use it for their classes?
20:46:34 <ykk> ^ see, or coordinate
20:46:48 <hislopg> ykk: sure! we do want to stick to HFOSS projects for the workshop though
20:47:24 <hislopg> If someone wants to suggest another HFOSS project, we could see if there's any group interest in that one too...
20:47:39 <ykk> hislopg: when or how?
20:48:00 <ykk> hislopg: would that be during Stage 2?
20:48:20 <hislopg> #link http://foss2serve.org/index.php/HFOSS_Projects has a longer list - note that it's not tightly curated though
20:49:04 <hislopg> ykk: if someone has a real interest in a different HFOSS project, we could share that with the group and see if a few people want to explore it together in stage 2
20:50:26 <hislopg> OK... any final questions or comments?
20:50:38 <ykk> Is there a Wiki page where we can add our suggestions / projects?
20:50:47 <stoney> hislopg should folks email their ideas? make a "write in" on the signups page? I think that's what ykk wants to know
20:51:11 <hislopg> ykk: email me if you want to pursue that option
20:51:15 <ykk> stoney: Yes, thanks!
20:51:46 <stoney> ykk did that answer you question?
20:51:47 <hislopg> I think we've run out of questions... let's wrap this up.
20:51:57 <stoney> yup
20:52:00 <carlosmalt> I would like to pursue that option as well. Both in the project and the course category. For example, there is no course for networking right now.
20:52:14 <stoney> ah good.. email greg
20:52:20 <stoney> :)
20:52:38 <carlosmalt> So new course suggestions to greg and new project suggestions to you?
20:52:40 * stoney will have to avoid hislopg for the next few weeks
20:52:53 <stoney> nope... all to hislopg :)
20:52:54 <hislopg> you can send them both to me
20:53:04 <carlosmalt> Got it. Thanks.
20:53:24 <ykk> Thank you! :-)
20:53:27 <stoney> motion to adjourn?
20:53:31 <hislopg> Thanks everyone! Have a great day...
20:53:36 <terry`> thanks!
20:53:38 <hislopg> seconded...
20:53:39 <carlosmalt> Thanks!
20:53:41 <stoney> by all!
