20:00:28 <brainycmurf> #topic Switching default CPU governor to a more powerful one
20:00:28 <brainycmurf> #link https://pagure.io/fedora-workstation/issue/212
20:00:30 <brainycmurf> Original issue: the reporter found that their system was slow. Needed to change the cpu governer to make it fast. This involves disabling power-profiles-daemon.
20:00:33 <brainycmurf> Bastien: one of the goals of ppd is to not change the device settings. Balanced is the same as not using the defaults. Defaults need to be changed in the kernel, etc. There isn't a way to improve gnome-shell performance without consuming more power - which isn't something we want to do.
20:00:37 <brainycmurf> Bastien: switching the cpu governer will change the base frequency, which uses more power. It's not something that we should do - it negates any power saving that we might try to do.
20:00:40 <brainycmurf> Bastien: the defaults need to be changed at the kernel level - we're not equipped to make those decisions.
20:00:45 <brainycmurf> Kalev: in the ticket, it was reported that the system was sluggish even with performance mode enabled. Bastien: it could be a kernel bug.
20:00:48 <brainycmurf> Bastien: the cpu governer isn't a preference - it's a setting. Performance mode raises the minimum frequency. The performance should be good if it's enabled.

20:00:54 <brainycmurf> Owen: the fact that performance mode didn't improve performance is one issue here. The other issue is that animations weren't smooth in the default (balanced) mode. Needs to be better scheduling between the CPU/GPU and gnome-shell.
20:00:58 <brainycmurf> General discussion about performance issues with gnome-shell - judged to be a general known issue with gnome-shell and not related to cpu settings.
20:01:01 <brainycmurf> Matthias: having performance mode in the quick settings creates an expectation - it should work.
20:01:03 <brainycmurf> Owen: isn't a fan of having performance mode in the quick settings. Doesn't want people using it to make their shell animations fast.
20:01:06 <brainycmurf> Owen: do we have a way to profile what's happening in thes shell and what's happening in the cpu? Bastien: not sure we can, but it should be doable.
20:01:09 <brainycmurf> #action we should close this ticket and ask the reporter to file a bug against power-profiles-daemon.
20:01:14 <brainycmurf> Owen: It would also be good to track the longstanding issue around not ramping up the cpu scheduling when the shell does animations.
20:01:17 <brainycmurf> #action Owen to provide some followup questions on the power-profile-daemon ticket.

20:01:33 <brainycmurf> #info The Fedora Flatpak SIG had its first meeting this week
20:01:35 <brainycmurf> Attendance was good. People are interested in doing work.
20:01:37 <brainycmurf> The KDE SIG is interested in packaging their own preinstalled apps as Flatpaks, for Kinoite, and they're interested in creating a runtime for that.
